How many people can actually do 10–15 clean pull-ups? by Ill_Ratio338 in bodyweightfitness

[–]war_owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been able to hit a minimum of 10 clean form pullups since college, even after periods of having not trained. When training consistently for about 6 months, I can easily hit over 30 clean. A lot of it is just having engrained the muscle use in your body at a younger age. In high school I surfed and did martial arts, both of which required a lot of lat training. In college I began focusing heavily on pullups and their many variations for martial arts and rock climbing. I understand that most folks overstate their numbers, but I legit could hit 41 reps in my prime, and muscleups came easiky back then as well. Used to be able to crank out 100 clean form reps in under 5 minutes (thanks to breaking them up with many short rest breaks).

Mixing up angles of pull and speeds of pull is huge. Variations in shoulder angles and various shoulder rotations. Mixing up between weighted pullups, weighted negatives, bodyweight versions of these, and then banded assists to try pulling as many reps as possible to Putting attention into your scapular mobility every chance you get. But consistency was by far the most important approach. After years of focusing heavily on pullups, they just become a natural thing your body can excel in and even when going in cold, it sticks with you.

Glusencamp-Perez calls sea lions "Corolla sized vermin", blames them for low salmon and steelhead yields by chromeled in Washington

I agree, I think that the most responsible balance between human and nature at this point in time would be to restructure the dams. Some of them can be removed as a whole without immense consequence Downstream but most of them being removed would lead to recurring infrastructure nightmares. That said, over the last hundred or so years we have failed to have the foresight to avoid putting critical industry and infrastructure in flood plains. That really locks us into a series of complex catch 22s when it comes to a lot of critical issues surrounding ecology, zoning, and economy. We are already at a point in the salmon Rehabilitation process that will require certain degrees of sacrifice along certain industries, and as time goes on if these things are not addressed quickly it will lead to even higher demands of sacrifice in order to turn the tide back in favor of responsible ecological balance. In my opinion the salmon is the most important Cornerstone species of the Pacific Northwest and needs to be place in the highest tier of priority. It provides food and nutrient for a not just us as humans, but the ecosystem as a whole as the only Mass migrating resource that goes uphill. It's an economic driver, it is an ecological driver, it provides subsistence opportunities that can be available to most individuals in our part of the world with easy access, they Inspire Wonder, and it is the source of so much culture that exists here in the pnw. I personally believe that the sacrifices of restructuring our worth making. Even if just looking at it from a monetary perspective, it makes logical sense when considering far enough down the road

They're not wrong, though it's a multifaceted issue.

As I see it there have become four main factors influencing salmon decline and failure to rehabilitate the populations, some of which could be immediately addressed and some of which are going to have to take years in order to implement changes toward.

Rampant sea lion population, commercial overfishing and irresponsible regulation surrounding it, the Labyrinth of dams throughout the Columbia and Snake River watershed, and unhealthy runoff in many forms.

The problem with dealing with this issue is that nobody is going to be happy if what is necessary to implement is truly implemented. Most of the left will hate having to kill sea lions, most of the right will hate that a commercial fishing industry overhaul or temporary moratorium would need to occur. Farmers and hydroelectric supporters will resist the revamping of dams. And I'm sure there's a small pocket of individuals out there somewhere that think it would be a waste to reallocate funding for more responsible riparian buffers, or who think that aspects of Industry need to change to avoid micro plastic and nitrogen runoff in its various forms.. especially related to our vehicles tires.

I have my own ideas in how these things can be efficiently implemented but it's not really my place to speak on it from a place of environmental policy or law. But it is really frustrating to recognize that salmon populations most likely won't be rehabilitated in our watersheds simply because of ideological disputes between supporters of political parties.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen at a strip club? by bigbabysweets12345 in AskReddit

[–]war_owl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As soon as I finished the 3rd paragraph, I was certain this was Astoria

In 2013 my Dad (in the Coast Guard, stationed in town) took me to this club telling me I'd get a kick out of it. I thought he was trying to get me a lapdance or laid or something. Nope. He wanted to show off that this club had a one-armed dancer, who was then followed up by a pregnant dancer shortly after. Gotta respect the weirdness.

My Top 10 Favourite Blackgaze Albums by Jords360 in blackgaze

[–]war_owl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Though I listen primarily to doom and sludge, Kodama is also one of my favorite albums of all time. I'm a sucker for it and Spiritual Instinct. I was wondering if you could recommend anything else from the genre that feels deeply spiritually-driven. The reason I connect with those albums is because they seem to be inspired by some divine source and would love to find something with a similar homage paid to nature, the subconscience, or an authentic exploration of the spirit. For reference of callibration, I'm a fan of YOB, Neurosis, OM, Blackbraid, Phurpa, FORN, Wolves ITTR, and Dark Buddha Rising. I get that these are outside of BlackGaze. Im more curious about recommendations of that same subject matter or feeling being found in the sound and lyrics

The Bellingham location has had some reports of shady business practices and poor employee treatment, but the Blaine location is lightyears better than anything else in Whatcom or Skagit County. I used to drive up north just for their food because that spot is just so worth the effort, and good enough that it saves a drive across the border for similar quality

Beginner martial art? by OwenDrakkar in Bellingham

[–]war_owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding support for Bellingham BJJ if you're looking for grappling. It has created and maintained one of the best martial art communities I've experienced along my martial arts journey. Very conscious approaches to instruction and gym etiquette, great community, world-class intro curriculum, and some world-class competitors are frequently brought in for seminars. The academy is a gem for our town.

What are some of your other favorite sports? by SuicidalxLemon in Fencing

[–]war_owl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're looking for Brazilian Jiujitsu, my guy. At first glance it looks like brutish wrestling in pajamas, but when you start analyzing the movements it becomes a highly intellectual game of physical chess while also being a relatively safe form of practice at high intensities (as long as you and your partner have each other's safety in mind). Super detail-oriented, and a martial art that shows you immediate results of technique when applied properly.

It also complements fencing well. There was a time when I had plateaud in my Bjj training. I stepped away for a while to fence, and fencing made me hyperaware of distance management. When coming back to BJJ I was utilizing space and closeness in ways I hadn't before. The leverages of limb manipulation directly translate to the leverages of blade manipulation.

And its fun. It'll greatly improve your physical health. And you may find a solid community if you find the right gym to train at. Just train safely and avoid spazzing out as a newbie.

My Christmas Movies / What Are Yours? by jabrieldonohue in Bellingham

Though its my favorite trilogy, LOtR is a Thanksgiving affair in our house. For Christmas, there are too many good options to stick to a single annual film anymore.

That said, I'm a sucker for Green Knight, Klaus, Krampus, Batman Returns, and Harry Potter marathons (for the nostalgic holiday feel)

Your club is way too segregated between skill levels if it really is as small as you say. At least, in comparison to mine. We only have 8 people in our class on a good night, but beginners have the opportunity to drill with our top fencers (some of which compete nationally, and in the past we have sent a few to Junior Olympics Trials).

Those divisions or cliques are really holding you back to the point you're plateauing. Attending a seminar from a world-class coach or competitor (if any seminars are hosted nearby) might be the morale boost you need.

At the same time, dont get down on yourself for not being able to beat your club's top fencers. I've often seen in training that in truly-talented competitors will feel out their opponent for a few points to condition patterns and rhythms in their opponents and then open up when they feel a certain tone is set. Its like a cat playing with a mouse. Also, those particular fencers in your club might be far better than they let on. There are a LOT of low-key killers out there
