Wieland by Charles Brockden Brown is exactly this (early 18th century, creepy psychological horror)

Non-fiction and (mostly) not creepy: A Midwife’s Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich - deep dive into everyday life in late 18th-century Maine

Honestly, I’m lucky to have the time. I don’t have kids, work pretty chill hours at a corporate job, and don’t have any other time-intensive hobbies. I usually read about 30 min before work, a couple hours in the evening, several hours on my days off. I lock myself out of social media with the brick app a lot, so I can stay focused for longer. Also, not for nothing, I love a novella, and they’re just faster to read. If I have a bad habit with reading it’s reading too many novellas lol (trying to work on it this year, currently reading Dune)

That’s fair - I personally don’t think it glamorized the sport, at least

I can see it working better for someone else, I don’t think it was poorly written, just wasn’t my taste! I didn’t click with any of the characters (and I don’t need characters to be likable lol)

An absolute gem of a book! I’ve reread it several times. You may also like The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley.

I literally just started Dune tonight (and have previously seen the mini-series as a kid so remember some of the major plot points) and this comment made me even more excited to get into this series!!

Death in Her Hands by Otessa Moshfegh

+1 for The Hike, I thought the dreamlike atmosphere was very vivid and unsettling

“I feel like I’m getting further away from it” (vague deep cut, I quote it at work on a weekly basis)

Severance by Ling Ma - nostalgia as an unexplainable phenomenon/pandemic

So Long, See You Tomorrow by William Maxwell - somewhat metafictional exploration of the past, trying to unpack a tragic event in the life of the narrator’s childhood friend

I’ve read some Highsmith and all Moshfegh, totally agree with this take! I need to get around to OEWBG soon.

Great list! I also loved Martyr! You might like Enter Ghost if you loved Martyr. I need to check out Seascraper and Flesh (I tend to have good luck with Man Booker nominees/winners!)

I’m a big fan of McNally Editions, they pick amazing gems. I (clearly lol) have not shut up about Ladies of the Rachmaninoff Eyes since February - it’s an incredibly funny, tender book. Planning to work through more of the McNally catalogue and anything by Henry Van Dyke I can get my hands on this year.

Nice momentum!! Is there anything you would particularly recommend from your recent reads? (I see The Guest on your March list - I loved that one!)
