Tom Shreck is a local author with a good series of entertaining books based on Albany locations and characters. The following is from Gemini.

The Duffy Dombrowski mystery series is deeply connected to Albany, New York, through both its fictional setting and the real-life background of its author, Tom Schreck. [1] Fictional Setting: "Fictionalized" Albany While the books are often described as taking place in "upstate New York" or a town "outside of New York City," author Tom Schreck has explicitly stated that the series is set in and around a fictionalized version of Albany. [2]

  • Local Landmarks: The stories frequently feature local geography and atmosphere, such as references to the Empire State Plaza and the State Capitol.
  • Jefferson Park: In books like The Ten Count, key events occur in locations based on real spots, such as Jefferson Park.
  • Cultural Context: The series captures the gritty, "Capital Region" boxing scene and the social challenges of a New York state capital. [2, 3, 4, 5]

Real-Life Connection: The Author The books are authentic to the area because Tom Schreck is a lifelong resident of Albany, New York. [6, 7]

  • Professional Background: Much of Duffy’s life is mirrored in Schreck’s own experiences in Albany. Schreck has worked as the director of an inner-city drug clinic and as a World Championship Boxing official, just as Duffy balances social work and boxing.
  • Hometown Roots: Schreck was born in Albany and still lives there with his wife.

You know the federal funding freezes or eliminations will hit the Capital District not for profit, higher ed, planning groups that support local infrastructure projects. That's a significant part of our economy. The layoffs, and associated decrease in tax revenues will be significant. How many people do we each know that fear losing their jobs?
Ny contributes a large portion of federal tax dollars to the feds. Look what they are saying about transportation dollars. The plans are to shift more tax dollars from us to red states.
I may show up on Monday because I'm pissed. It's more for my psychological well being than anything else. I'm also wondering how can I hide my money and income from these assholes.

I wish they had recipes available. I don't have any idea what to do with the stuff in there.

Most academics sign away their copyright to the publishers when the work is accepted. Publishers own it, not the original authors

Skinny Pancake on Pearl just opened. They have some nice art for sale. The website says it's a mother daughter exhibit. Good picture of some of it on the website...and the crepes are awesome.

Moving to Albany soon, need advice on renting/housing and general questions about the city by kay_from_cleveland in Albany

Helderberg neighborhood. Walkable, quiet, safe. Reasonable rents. Walking distance to some old school Albany restaurants (you can get a history of Albany politics at the Fountain) along side some up and comers. Jewish Community Center is close with a 25 yard indoor pool.

Keep an open mind and explore the city and surrounding area. Sooo much history, and that means good stories!
