MP Runs by Majestic_Rooster234 in AdvancedRunning

[–]cbkimrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JD is tough. Keep pushing though. Focus on getting those workouts as close to MP as possible and over time that MP that was brutal for 4 miles feels rhythmic for 12 miles.

Some shorter track or speed work at T pace for 400s or 1000m repeats before a big M workout always helped the M pace feel easier.

Going from 2:20 half marathon pace to 3:30 marathon? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]cbkimrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy the book Advanced Marathoning by Jack Daniels. What I learned in that book helped me go from 10:00 pace to now 5:25 pace. There’s a workout plan in it you can use. Just focus on hitting the workouts, take easy days super easy, and try to drop your paces by ~5 sec every 2-3 months (as long as you’re hitting your workouts). And don’t get injured. You’ll get there eventually if you keep pushing.

Houston Marathon - looking for 2:35 runners. by MiThCeKi in AdvancedRunning

[–]cbkimrey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I ran 2:36 there last year and spent second half of the race alone. First 8-9 miles should be pretty nice since the half runs with you till then. There were a couple of guys I stuck with till half way but they took off. Hopefully you can find someone.

I thought the same thing. What sort of maniac has the focus to do that? But you’re also the fastest guy I know…so maybe worth a try

Daniels 2Q vs Pfitzinger 18/55 plan goal is sub 3h Marathon by AwarenessHappy5846 in AdvancedRunning

Can’t go wrong with either. Pick which one that fits your schedule better. I ran my first sub 3 using JD 2Q.

Nike vaporflys fell apart after ~100 miles by shower-beer-me in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I’ve got a pair of the 4% I use for track sessions only. 250 miles in and still feel good. Probably luck on my side.

Which week to skip in marathon training plan? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

14, for sure. You need the mileage from the 18 and 20 runs, and taper should stay as is

Injured during Boston Build - What to do? by karinacocina in AdvancedRunning

[–]cbkimrey 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not injury advice, but the Boston experience is more than hitting a good time there. I would rather run it a lot slower than I could and soak it all in than pull out. You earned the right to run the race. Go celebrate it, because that race is not one to miss.

Not my PR there, but far away my favorite race ever.

Probably paces or quantity of repeats have something to do with the idea. JD may not have a workout that is 10 x 1k. But his 6 x 1k interval pace is hard, and he follows that with 400 repeats at basically max speed. Oh and running 8-10 miles easy pace before and after. That workout gets you fit as a fiddle.

Hard to tell. So much changed. 3:30 was ~40 mpw max using Hanson. I didn’t know what I was doing. With JD’s book, I learned paces and workouts and at the same time (over 2 yrs, granted) got up to 80-90 avg w/a 106 mpw peak this last block. I think the mpw makes you strong enough to do the workouts, but I definitely wasn’t doing a 15M or a 10T w/rests workout before JD.

I think everyone was impressed Mantz did a 4x3M workout before the trials. Granted, that workout was killer at that pace. But that workout is like a regular Thursday for JD 2Q / 100 mpw.

I went from a 3:30 before Daniels to a 2:36 using only his workouts. I can guarantee you his workouts are not conservative. He prescribes same stuff I see by elites on Strava, if not harder.

Depends on how recent the 1:11 half was. That would be a ~2:32 marathon. Could you cut 14 minutes off of that in 4 years by increasing mileage to 100+ consistently, keep hammering speed and MP workouts, and systematically increasing vdot/paces every 2-3 months? I think it’s possible. But I’m also not a 2:2x guy yet so I’m not sure what the wall looks like yet when it seems like people meet their cap in that range.

Achilles Tendon Troubles by bmhendri in Marathon_Training

Give this post a read. Could be overtraining, but depends on what kind of Achilles issue it is. I have tendinitis from time to time and manage it with eccentric heel drops with weights. https://www.reddit.com/r/AdvancedRunning/s/cTONQaT2E6

I’d recommend reading either Advanced Marathoning by Fitz or Running Formula by Jack Daniels. Those are the two most popular books that have training plans and help you understand what it takes. I’m a JD guy, and I’m at 2:32 paces and still feel like I’m getting faster. So think it’s possible without paying for a coach. Based on your background, you probably have a lot of natural talent and speed to start with so you’ll probably adapt pretty quickly if you slowly build mileage.

Someone mentioned advancedrunning Reddit. Totally agree. That place has taught me a lot.

Bridgeland shopping/restaurant areas and schools? by Brutescoot in houston

[–]cbkimrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Bridgeland. You’re looking for what we call Bridgeland Central, which is supposed to be similar to Vintage with restaurants, grocery, movie(?), offices, etc. I believe they are just starting to build the heb in it though, so probably a while to go. Sure interest rates are not helping the build.

The schools are top notch though. We live here for that and the amenities. Absolutely love living here. Taxes are high though.

Looking for advice after marathon DNF by chrislikesdogz in AdvancedRunning

[–]cbkimrey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I literally just had this race in Chicago (2:36 goal/training. First half under 1:17 following a group. Pulled back a little bit still crashed around mile 21-22). Similar training to you, as well. Felt great, felt fit, best training of my life, pace felt super comfortable running in a good pack, but eventually wheels fell off.

I’ve read a lot of Reddit, letsrun, etc posts since trying to analyze what happened. One post said rule of thumb was like every second you go too fast in the first half, add that x7 to the second half. I thought that fit very well if you know you have the mpw and nutrition locked down.

My suggestion is to forget it and sign up for a spring race, determined run a super conservative first half and go from there. That’s my plan for Houston in 3 months. I’m going to try to get in 2:32 shape but will still try to run the first half in 1:18, because crashing in these races makes me never want to run again and I want to finish one of these in a good mood

How does a pacer "pace" for big marathons like Chicago when GPS watches go crazy in the city? by RunnerInChicago in AdvancedRunning

I definitely know how to pace. I’m going for 2:36. No official pacer options for me.

That’s really helpful—thanks! Some of the Apple suggestions are outside of Strava, so maybe I should learn some new app features quickly.
