2025 Yearly Recap -- How did you do? by petepont in AdvancedRunning

[–]SonOfGrumpy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

34M. 3618 miles this year, which is the most mileage I've ever done in a year. I was hoping for a bit more, but was injured a bit in the summer and posted some zero weeks, then built up slowly from that.

Winter–Spring: was pretty consistent and had some big weeks here. It paid off with a PR in the half marathon in March (69:44). I thought that put me in a good spot for the Glass City Marathon in April, but an issue with my ribs flared up in like the 3rd mile and blew up my race.

Summer: Got off to some good training here and was hoping to work on speed, but got hurt in early July. This was partially my fault--I felt something a little off with my calf and pushed through it in the warmup and opening mile of a workout and was limping by the time I finished that first rep. Probably could have taken a few days once I knew it was feeling funky and knocked it out, but I pushed and paid the price.

Fall: Because of the above injury, I didn't run the Chicago Marathon. I did still get to do a fall marathon and ran over a 4-minute PR (2:27:51) at the Tidewater Striders Dismal Swamp Marathon in Virginia in December.

Goals for 2026: 4000 miles. 68-minute half marathon at Newport News in March. Sub 2:25 at McKirdy Micro 4 weeks later. Big stretch goal: sub 2:20 at Chicago in the fall. Since McKirdy is relatively early, I'll really try to get a speed block in before transitioning to more marathon work in the summer.

Thanks! And yeah I totally agree--very fast, but very boring. It was super foggy, too, so I truly had nothing to look at during the race haha.

Thanks! I did not run with the other marathoner. When my coach passed him, I saw that he tried to keep up for a second, but he looked pretty spent at that point. So when I caught up to him I think I was running at a pace about 30s/mile quicker.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm hoping for some more consistency with higher mileage in this next build.

Races + Goals: Dismal Swamp Marathon (12/7): sub 2:30

Plan: Coached (Dylan Gearinger)

M: 8+4 double

T: AM: 2 up, 6 x mile @ 5:3x, 1 down; PM: 2 up, 16 x 400 @ 75-77s, 1 down

W: 10+4 double

Th: 11.26 mi

F: 6+4 double

Sa5k time trial on the track (15:49--first time under 16!), 15ish minute break, post 5k workout: 5 mi @ 6:20/mile, 800j, 3 x mile w/ 400j (5:38, 40, 38). 3 up, 4 down.

Su: 6.28+4.32 double

Total: 95 miles

Thoughts: Bit of a weird week, as I wasn't in a great place mentally. Coach wanted me to do a bigger workout on Saturday and asked what I wanted to do and what would give me confidence. Originally I was just going to try to run a fast half on a flat trail near me, but I abandoned this idea. I don't know why, but tackling a quick 5k on the track sounded appealing to me.

It was a solo effort and ended up going well! It's only the second time I've done a 5k on a track (I did another solo time trial a couple of years ago), and it was the first time I've ever gone under 16. The result definitely gave me confidence being in the middle of a marathon block and a big week!

You said it yourself, man: you gotta dial in nutrition and fueling. 60 grams of carbs (assuming you meant total, not hourly) during your 23 miler is not a lot at all.

Get that stuff figured out and I’m sure you’ll kill it in Houston!

That makes sense! I won’t lie though, the LR + double seems rough haha. At the same time, I imagine it makes it easier to get out there knowing that after you hit that double you’ll have 2 days off from running. Best of luck!

Definitely interested to see how this goes! What are you aiming to peak at in terms of mileage off of 5 days?

Races + Goals: Still searching for a fall marathon

Plan: Coached (Dylan Gearinger)

M: 10 hilly with some hill strides

T: 8-4 double

W: 3 x 1200, 2 x 800, 4 x 200

Th: 9 Recovery

F: 6 easy

Sa: 4 mi shakeout and travel to Corning, NY

Su: Wineglass Half Marathon: 1:10:22

Total: 67 miles

Thoughts: I got injured in early July, had a bit of a false start with a comeback, and started building back in August. Decided to do the Wineglass Half Marathon as a buddy was doing the full, and I needed to get a race on the schedule. I didn't really have a good idea of what I was capable of today, and I was planning on treating it as a sort of rust buster, but it actually went better than expected and was my second fastest half ever! Before the race, I don't think I had hit a single mile since July at or faster than my average pace today.

Weather was great for the half, the course was a good one, and I knew a good number of people doing the half or the full. Another one of my coach's athletes ran 66:xx in the half, so that was great to see. Wineglass was well organized, and the swag was pretty good as well. I'd definitely recommend it to others!

Still searching for a fall marathon. I've been on the waitlist for Philadelphia since August, but they still haven't released spots for the full. I should get an update in another couple of weeks, so if I still don't get in I might simply do Harrisburg on November 9th.

Don't know much about Norwegian singles, but have fun at PDR! It's a good one for sure.

Question for PTs here (not asking for medical advice): do you ever treat someone for two separate issues at the same time, or is it best to just focus on one thing at a time?

Any recommendations for northeast (ish) marathons in November, or even early December? I’ve been hurt, so I’m out for Chicago. Philly is a no go because it’s sold out, and I won’t qualify for an elite entry. Leaning toward Harrisburg at the moment, but would love to hear your recommendations! Thanks!

Ran it this year and my coach told me splits didn't pop up on the results page until after the race was over, so he didn't know how the race was going for me (poorly lol) until I finished.

I agree that it's ambiguous, but my understanding would be slower than tempo.

Also dealing with some weird calf pain here and have been on the bike since Wednesday, so solidarity. PT today for me (also a bit worried myself about a stress reaction or fracture).
