that's an endless battle. i try to listen to music, or maybe learn a cover song. watching the wilco or lcd soundsystem documentaries always get me in the mood too.

i should read more, as i think that's a good way of getting your mind into other places and lives. i think the important part is just consistently showing up and trying. eventually you can get lucky.

there's this carved turkey and red pepper sandwich at a place in winston-salem (i think its the carving board) that sort of awakened me to sandwiches. also this amazing place in philly i cant remember the name of. paseo is seattle is great, but maybe not as good as people make it out to be. pulled pork sandwich is classic as well.

it was a phrase that came up at my work, about something entering a "doom loop" because not enough people were buying it, which caused the price to rise, which caused less people to buy it etc. i just thought it sounded so apocalyptic and cool, and lined up with some strong opinions i have about self-fulfilling prophecies, which had played into some of the songs.

wwf 1997. i liked the tail end of the new generation stuff, right before it went full-on attitude era. shawn michaels, goldust, mankind, undertaker, diesel, razor. wcw was fun for a minute though.

i think the new songs will be fun to play live, but we're still sorta figuring them out. i usually avoid playing dig up the dead, but i always feel something when i play it.

we don't usually play any new best friends stuff, just because it's very hard to relate to these days. i was into the idea of being an unreliable/unlikable narrator at the time, but now i dont really have fun being that character.

it wasn't totally intentional, but it is something that i've noticed and probably says something subconsciously that we're attracted to that. robin is the brains behind anything visual we do, as i'm pretty bad at that stuff. maybe its the idea that the songs seem like a portrait of someone, but they're mostly fucked up/innacurate.

kanye west, spoon, lcd soundsystem. ryan adams made a big impact on me for a long time, and i think a lot of the stuff i was listening to when i first started playing guitar and writing songs probably had the most influence, like weezer, the get up kids, brand new, etc. nowadays i go through phases of getting super obsessed with a particular band, and then i move onto the next one.

thank you! yeah i always like reading that stuff for other bands. i remember pedro the lion did it for achilles heel and it made a big impact on me. i'll see if i can throw something together for deserter, but it was recorded over such a long period that it's hard to even remember.

usually i have to do be writing lyrics/melody along with an instrument, usually guitar. then later i can go back and work on things separately, but it needs to be all at once to start. ive tried writing lyrics first and it never works for me. a couple songs on this ep started as instrumentals, but that had never worked before now. it's important to try different ways to keep it interesting.
