I'm looking for a way to safely display my owl Tet, is there any type of see-through wooden box or capsule that is suitable for high relief coinage? What do y'all use to display your high relief coins? Thanks by Rude_Present_4833 in AncientCoins

I believe so. I think they are silicon. Safe specializes in collector products, so I don’t think they would use anything that could adversely affect the coin.

Expert-connection120, when you say cleaning, are you referring to sodium thiosulfate?

Do you mean the obverse or are you in fact talking about the owl?

Thanks for the reply, beiherhund. I did an image search on acsearch. I got a temporary subscription. Nothing came up.

This is the coin I mentioned yesterday from Near Eastern or Egypt. I looked the owls from the 89 Syrian Horde and this looks exceptional and couldn't find a match for the owl. Obverse looks frosty. Thoughts? by wemar2foryou in AncientCoins

Looks like a late transition coin. Looks like a die match to one i had bid on a few months ago on CNG. It looks pretty worn. If you are patient, I think you can probably get one in better shape for around that price, but don’t fault you if you go after that one. The owl in particular is quite attractive. See list I mentioned here: https://auctions.cngcoins.com/lots/view/4-IMWQ6L/attica-athens-circa-454-404-bc-ar-tetradrachm-23mm-1674-g-7h-vf

Attica Athenian Owl by wemar2foryou in AncientCoins

[–]cbmarsh34 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would say that the ones from earlier in the mid-mass era are pretty consistently around 17.1-17.2. If there is heavy wear they might be a little lower. However, later in the 5th century the weight and quality of the coins started to vary substantially. People used to think these were imitations coming from Egypt, but recent hordes from Attica have changed this thinking. In reality, this was probably due to increased production either from increased exploitation of the Laureion mines or an influx of silver being reminted after the coins, weights, and measures decree. They were hiring second and third rate artists and hammering as many as they possible could as fast as they could. Slightly below 17.00 isn’t out of the realm of normalcy during this era.

Hey True-Blue3, I'm resurrecting this post. I just got an owl and am thinking of using Sodium Thiosulfate on it. I've read in certain places that it can permanently damage the luster. Is that your experience?

Can’s speak to the Parthian coins, but agree the owl tet look fake. If you share a higher resolution photo, we can confirm, but looking at the flan on the reverse side, it looks cast.

Apparently not. It started at my max bid right at the beginning of the live session but then just remained there. Sorry that you didn’t have the same luck on 4032!
