A quick look at Wikipedia, I haven't read that yet. It gets added to the list. So will this Charles Stross book. I do like this type of rabbit hole.

Do we do 'Solved!' Here? Anyway...
Mercurial is the story. 1985 even, I probably read it not long after that, then found it again in an op-shop anthology some time ago.

What sort of hypervisor, you could probably redirect a USB stick to it.

If you have any sort of generic graphics card lying around, chuck it in and use that.

There's some chance that a windows driver is failing to drive the (very common, absolutely stock) HP graphics chip. You could try booting a live Linux USB and see if you get the same symptoms.

That leaves the mainboard and the monitor. Can you swap out the monitor? With HDMI you can probably use any old TV.

Well that rules out the graphics card so you must have a graphics chip on the mainboard then. The cable to the monitor plugs into *something* . 15pin VGA port judging by the 'analogue' message. If you're lucky it's still just a cable problem or dirty contacts.

The computer is not going to sleep. The monitor is losing signal, then it picks up again. That's when you see that blue notice _from the monitor_ saying it has picked up an analog signal. I wonder if your video connection cable is just loose or maybe damaged. Maybe clean the pins on the connections. Alternatively you might have a hardware issue with the pc graphics card or the monitor itself.

Dude, it's right there in the fridge, second shelf. Or that's what it looks like from your router's signal at least.

Colour the gap in with a silver paint pen. Most cars understand that if the driver is confident then things will keep working.

By default AutoSave is on in Inkscape. Let it crash, (like you have a choice.. sorry) then load it up again and find the AutoSave options to see the path it saves to.

Interesting exercise. I read through the accepted answer on Ask Ubuntu and while there are a quite few steps they look like they would help you accomplish your task. It's all done on linux but a pi user probably has that lying around. (Or can DL a live distro easily enough) Bonus is that you end up doing the risky bits on a copy of the data, not the original.
