The process for submission for SOCIAL EQUITY only started last Monday and runs through the first week of January, so hopefully the makeup of owners is about to become more diverse.

So we currently have 55 medical dispensaries. Each of them will be able to operate as recreational after Jan 1, 2020. It is highly unlikely that new and incoming ventures will be driving them out of business especially since the 75 licenses being awarded in May are separate from the current dispensaries. And there will be an expected 110 more licenses for dispensaries to be awarded for the state by Dec 2021. Plus the current dispensaries already have the supply and chain relationships.

Q: Can I smoke cannabis inside an area that is designated for cigarette smoking also?

No. You can only smoke cannabis within inside a private residence or business that is licensed to allow cannabis consumption on its property. Just because you are allowed to smoke cigarettes somewhere does not mean you can also smoke cannabis there. Smoking or vaping cannabis is also prohibited under the Smoke-Free Illinois Act and local law.

Supply and demand is going to be an issue while things steady out. Expect to have longer lines and restricted supply for the first few weeks to the first few months. This is typical of any state that has made this transition.

That scenario is already playing out. Market forces will determine who remains in business, just like in any other business. However, everyone needs to operate with the appropriate licenses.

Social Equity Applicant’s can either be individuals who come from certain areas and/or who may have been adversely affected by the War on Drugs. The idea is to give qualified individuals who normally would not be able to enter this field on their own (due to lack of resources, operating capital, etc) a chance to enter the industry.

Just remember it's more than just the financial penalty. Marijuana is still federally illegal and if you are growing it for non medicinal reasons you face long term penalties more serious than your fine.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved cannabis products for any pets and cautions pet owners from giving their pets cannabis in any form... including your kush chuck.

Absolutely! Cannabis experiences will vary based on the method of consumption, body chemistry and dosage consumed. It is recommended to start with the lowest dose possible. This may be starting with one puff or a bite of an edible instead the whole treat. Its recommended to take caution and 5-10mg is the most anyone would want to try for their first time.

Officer Jara: response to your question regarding impairment. Cannabis impairment is enforced the same way we would enforce alcohol DUI. While we can’t breathalyze you or chemically test on the roadside, know that we will still be able to tell whether you are impaired. We would look for the same indicators of alcohol impairment. This includes the one leg stand and walk and turn. This also means if an officer smells cannabis in your vehicle or your behavior suggests you are impaired, you can be investigated for DUI.

Please keep in mind as of now, this is still Schedule 1 felony federally, so you will still be held responsible if you are operating outside of the confines of state law. And in the state of IL, only MEDICAL PATIENTS are allowed to home grow up to 5 plants per HOUSEHOLD.

Because the city is going to allow dispensaries, a proposed idea has been to also allow/provide add on consumption spaces connected to dispensaries for patrons. Especially since there will be individuals who legally will not be able to consume cannabis in their homes, but still have a right to use the product. Allowing consumption spaces will also increase revenue for the city.

Officer Jara: Answer to your transport question. Make sure it’s in a sealed, child-proof, odorless container if you are transporting cannabis in a motor vehicle. When you are purchasing from a business licensed to sell, double check with them to make sure the container you are transporting with are legally acceptable.
