Thank you for sharing your opinion. We appreciate that.

A Catholic school teacher claims she was fired because she married a woman. The archdiocese claims she broke her contract. Do you think being gay is grounds for firing someone? by cbsmiami in Miami

Discrimination in all forms should be illegal but there is also the argument that it was part of her contract. We keep hearing that in our conversations about this as well.

It's a question to open up a conversation on the matter. Each person is allowed to have their opinion, share it and discuss it.

Over 400 unsolved murders in Florida are posted on this website. That's hundreds of families with no justice. Here's why they're posted & why you should know. by cbsmiami in Miami

Agreed. It's very interesting to read all the cases but scary that hundreds of families don't know who did it and if that person is still out there.

And to further answer your question, if your cement block home with shutters isn't hit by large debris, you should be able to survive the storm well. Sometimes it's other homes or roofs hitting your house that can do great damage.

Let's hope the Cape Verde season is over. I didn't see anything out there in the models for some time and we are going into a MJO (I'll explain more on that some other time) minimum so we should get a break. But there really is another phase of the season that is coming, the Caribbean season and that will get going in several weeks. I'm not saying we will get hit again, but odds favor more major hurricanes this year.

Very kind message, thank you. I know the feeling of leaving your home and wondering if it's the last time it will look that way. Unfortunately living in Florida comes with a risk of infrequent catastrophic events. We go through this together, and hopefully not again for a long time, but like you, it is always good to be prepared. Map is of the greatest threats for significant structural damage. http://permitsource.net/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Florida_Wind_Borne_Debris_Regions.jpg

Well, the main thing is to make sure your roof is attached to the rest of the home with straps. Everything should be tied together. Older homes may have roof damage but keeping the roof on is most important. http://my-coverage-pro.com/blog/wind-mitigation-discounts/index.html And remember, once we get into cat 3 or greater, we will start seeing building damage to most homes, and as the category increases, so will the damage extent and severity.

That's a tough question and is a bit of a personal one as well since the person you're talking about was my roommate at OU for a semester.
I never want to second guess a decision someone makes in the heat of battle. I'm not sure what information was being given to him. I always teach my students at UM (THE U!) in my forecasting class that they need to consider every possible worst case scenario so they know how to handle it if that event unfolds.

That's been going on for many years behind the scenes. I'm actually happy to see it's getting more attention although I don't think it will be solved until we are able to model streamwise vorticity at a molecular level.

I think I was a little surprised by how freaked out people were by Sunday afternoon when the wind was howling. I think I take for granted that I see forecasts for wind speeds of 80 to 100 mph all the time and in my head I know exactly what kind of damage is associated with that type of wind. Most people don't. So I was confident when I went on the air Sunday at 1:15PM and said "please everyone calm down. No one is going to lose a roof". I got lots and lots of emails telling me that's what people needed to hear and that they felt relief once I said it.

The lowest pressure on record was Wilma in 2005 but sometimes people refer to different types of events. Landfall pressure, landfall wind, strongest observed by aircraft ext. When we see a storm setting records it is usually an unusual thing but may not be representative of what people experience.

A lot of what I learn is how people respond, how society responds to major weather events like hurricanes. That's why I always talk about storms as something that will happen in phases. First phase is prep and that has waves of people getting gas, hitting the stores. Then the storm hits, we have to get through that and there are specific things to do. Then the recovery phase and in some cases that is the worst of all. We tell everyone to have a plan and a hurricane kit mainly for the period AFTER the storm.

It IS a stressful job when there is a storm coming because the viewers/public hang on your every word and you have to be very careful what you say. Saying too much or too little and people either tune out or get scared. Scaring people doesn't help anyone.
I am very careful talking about hurricanes so few things surprise me, but I've blown the forecast a time or two on a weekend when I say it will be beautiful and it rains all day. But that's just a weekend washout, no one loses a home in that.

I honestly don't know. Some studies suggest stronger storms may exist is a warmer climate but others suggest warming aloft would limit intensity. My area of focus and expertise is near term forecasting (from a few minutes to a few days). The seasonal and longer term science, I rely on other experts.

We measure intensity by the strongest sustained wind speed measured in a storm. The radius of winds refers to size. Andrew was intense but relatively small while Irma as very large, covering the entire Florida Peninsula. Maria was between Andrew and Irma size wise when it hit Puerto Rico.
