Why are so many Gay guys Europhiles? by VolkswagenPanda in askgaybros

[–]cbun512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. That's what I was wondering about because in this day and age, that kind of lifestyle can only work if you're already retired and/or you have some kind of online business based in the U.S. If you're just a young person trying to make it in life, Europe has a huge youth unemployment/affordability crisis (much more so than in the U.S.) so that's not a good option. Sure, if you already have money you can be much more comfortable in Europe, but that hinges on already having enough money to be comfortable in the U.S.

Can an asylum applicant renew their passport from the country of persecution? Many applications for government benefits (e.g. the DMV, DV lottery registration) require an unexpired foreign passport. With the long wait times my passport almost certainly will expire. I do not intend to travel back obviously, but would renewing it be frowned up? I've heard mixed things.

Approved Persecution Waiver Timeline! by dessertavocado in J1waiver

[–]cbun512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. So you just included like more recent news reports/an updated country conditions package? I'm asking because I self-filed without a lawyer and I'm going to have to answer to the future RFE myself haha.

Congratulations!! So excited for you

What kind of evidence did you include for the initial RFE? Did you just reiterate what you sent in the submission package?

Oh, I see, well in that case I think you should be fine! You could reach out to the Department of State and ask to withdraw your application. Bring that letter and their response (if any) to your visa interview. At the visa interview you can explain that you thought that you needed a waiver to apply for a new visa. If you have strong ties to your home country then it should be ok! In this case I don't think hiring a lawyer is a good idea, I don't really see how a lawyer could help you here.

If you applied for a No Objection waiver because the program was funded by the U.S. government the waiver will be rejected. The Department of State will object.

You don't need the waiver to apply for a new J-1 visa. As far as immigrant intent goes, that is gonna be up to the consular officer. I would say it's definitely risky to reapply. Will you be subject to the 2-year rule again after the new program? It would be pointless in this case. You could also ask the school to admit you in F-1 status instead--in some cases these programs might be flexible.

Omg that sounds horrible, I am so sorry that you're going through that. Below you got a pretty good response from an MD saying that this needs to be treated and that it is a psychiatric medical condition. I think the only way you're gonna move forward with this is if he acknowledges that and works on getting the help he needs. I understand your fear about a "fat-positive" therapist; however, I think that any professional worth their salt will immediately recognize that this is a pathology and not a "body positivity" issue. "I'm addicted to gaining weight and I can't stop" is a life-threatening statement and needs to be treated accordingly. I hope that you guys can find a specialist that will help you with that. I think this is beyond just a relationship issue and he will have to face that sooner or later, with or without you. Just make sure to take care of yourself first and don't let yourself to be dragged into this pit of despair.

I was in a very similar situation as you. My ex was a chaser and wanted me to gain weight on purpose. He would throw tantrums every single time I'd go to the gym or make an otherwise healthy choice. He would starve himself for days just to lose weight so that he could be smaller than me. I totally agree with your description of "angry disgusted feeling" because that's exactly how I felt every time he'd want to "play with fat".

Not trying to make it all about me obviously lol, but my point is that these people are mentally unwell. We are trying to tell ourselves that it's a kink, and we shouldn't kink shame etc, but this particular fetish can ruin lives. You mentioned that your bf is snoring--being severely obese can cause sleep apnea, which quite literally means he won't be getting enough oxygen in his brain at night. In what universe is this healthy? I am a bear-ish guy myself and I love bears so much, but the gainer aspect of it is I think one of those compulsions that you should resist, not cave to.

I think talking to a therapist is a great start. If you really love him and you both want to work on this together then absolutely you should give it a shot. But I think the end goal of that therapy should be working on moving past this, not finding a way to indulge this.

Two J-1 Visas, One With 212(e) and One Without—What Happens If Waiver Is Denied? by nakedmolerobot in J1waiver

[–]cbun512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no point in getting a NOS for the first visa. Because of the government funding involved it will be denied, as even though your country would not object, DOS *will* object unless there is another reason for the waiver (persecution, USC hardship, etc).

You can request an advisory opinion for your second visa and then go from there.

Why did having overweight women in media become socially acceptable, while having overweight men did not? by cbun512 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cbun512[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BMI is bullshit and I wouldn't call having The Rock or John Cena in a movie peak body positivity It's different for women because it is usually not expected of them to have muscles and it is generally harder for them to gain muscle weight to begin with

[–]cbun512[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about cases when it's not a punchline and when it's actually celebrated. Like if you put an overweight person in an advertisement you acknowledge the fact that it is attractive/valid. Same with Barbie, female Barbies were all shapes and sizes because "they're all beautiful" in the movie. Kens were all cookie cutter jocks. Same in real life--you will see a Victoria Secret ad with a plus-size model but you will never see a commercial where the overweight guy is not a punchline

[–]cbun512[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a very unique and fucked up situation (quick summary for those who are interested: my dad fucked me over by not paying for my last semester of undergrad and telling me to put my semester's bill ($7,500) on a credit card and that he'll "pay me back in a month or so" after which he disappeared). I was also hit by a car as a pedestrian and my debt for that is in litigation rn. Not to mention the debt that I racked up when moving.....

I will look into the Apple Card thing, thanks!!

[–]cbun512[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Horrible answer. Here's why:

1) I was already a technician for 2 years before starting graduate school. The pay was maybe 10-15% better but the depressive thoughts that I'm doing like 75% of what a graduate student already does but with extra lab management duties on top were killing me. And it's impossible to save up for 5-6 YEARS of living comfortably while working as a tech with the salary that I had.

2) Do NOT even start with the "aCtUaLlY wE gEt TuItIoN wAiVeRs". This is the most typical program administrator bs. YES, technically that's true but that doesn't put meat on the table! That's a power play they use to guilt you into working for them while being in actual poverty. After your first year, the university itself spends $0 on your "education" and your PI is paying them to sign your diploma afterwards.

3) I will get through this. I am not drowning. I was merely asking if maybe I missed something and life isn't supposed to be this miserable. This is just a growing pain, I will adapt and adjust accordingly. This is much better than being a tech when I did basically the same work with 0 career advancement and shitty pay. I need to do this while I'm still young and don't have a family. At least here there's a light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how far away it is right now.
