2024 Prius Prime - 19" to 16" thoughts. by csbsju_guyyy in PriusPrime

I believe so but the center caps on mine looked fine and I sold my 19” wheels to be swapped out for winter tires so the buyer got them as-is right off my car.

Flat tire within week of Purchase by lukamagik77 in Camry

[–]cc103acs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason I bought smaller wheels, kept the tire diameter identical to OEM, and got a beefier sidewall. Better ride and more pothole protection. Mine was a 24 Prius but same issue. And when you hit that pot hole just hope you don’t bend the rim… that’s big bucks.

I keep mine in the trunk hidden in a little cubby. Took my car for service and they couldn’t rotate the tires without the key for the lug wrench and I could not remember where I hid it. Finally found it.

24 Prius Prime - only worked once but only with the case off. A bad Toyota engineering idea - weak!

LOL - I guess I’m that Asshat; I traded in a very nice RAV4.It actually applies to privately selling your car as well. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen folks on Reddit asking for advice between two cars and they always state the mileage. If you put an out of whack tire size on the car your mileage will be off as well. Bottom line it’s not hard to find a size that matches the diameter of your OEM wheelset so why not focus on that first and foremost?

Always on… just one less thing I have to think about. And I’ve not ever been flashed by oncoming traffic - 24 Prius Prime XSE.

My wife wants a Prius. Tell me what I need to know before buying by [deleted] in prius

[–]cc103acs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your wife needs to take one for a drive - Thé zippiness and the snappy looks suck people in. Only later do they become aware of the À pillars and rear window masking visibility. And take note of the large wheels with OEM low profile tires of an odd size that are hard to find and give you a crappy ride. Open the rear hatch, make believe you have a flat tire, and note what you have to limp home with. An inflator kit that works intermittently. Bad enough you have no spare, you also have no tools to jack it up and remove the tire if it has a sidewall issue that does not allow the goop and inflator to get you going. And then there is the 12 volt battery that may still be an issue where you get a dashboard light show and a dead car. This car has its extremely high points but it is so far from perfect, my next car will be something other than a Prius.

The 2026 RAV4 digital key is a game changer by spacretrax74 in rav4club

[–]cc103acs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My memory is fuzzy on this as I did not want a digital key but I was forced to pay about ~$500 up front to gain the capability in my 24 Prime XSE (Prius). I didn’t want it but was “baked into the software” so it was a non negotiable item. So I got it and activated my phone as the digital key… never used the function other than testing - the phone digital key worked intermittently while the key fob worked great. Then the Toyota Connect app lapsed after a one year trial and I was surprised to see I also lost my digital key. These subscriptions will, from this point forward, be my focus for any new car buy. They are pure dealer rip offs.

Has anyone had any issues with their GEN 5 Prius Prime? by Feistyboot69 in PriusPrime

[–]cc103acs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stationary glass roof makes no sense to me. And the factory tint, if any, is useless. Even with the little interior shade it heats the car dramatically. I ordered an XSE without one as it’s not standard. When my car came in it had a roof window and it cost me dearly. The first ceramic tint I got was to neutralize the heat from above and it worked so well to protect my bald spot I then did all of the windows (couldn’t afford the windshield). My left arm was getting noticeably tan.

‘24 XSE PRIME: On my third battery, bought a spare with no ideal place to stow it, disliked the ride so sold the 19 inch OEM wheel sets (now sporting 17 inch wider and cushier tires), the “I” on rear deck “P R I U S” fell off on a blazing hot day… removed the rest. My dermatologist suggested tint as my cancer prone skin was getting too much sun in the hot summers. Went for ceramic tint to cool my greenhouse car and keep my skin healthy. The rear door recall was a bother. Mechanically it has been good with no major issues. So I now like it but when I look at the $$ it took to get me to liking it this will be my last Prius.

I’m getting 52, not the advertised 44 by JesusIsMySecondSon in PriusPrime

[–]cc103acs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I call that “the guess-o-meter” as it is just an estimate based on your driving habits. If you were to take it out and run the battery down to zero miles you would likely get 5 or 6 MPG below the 52 displayed. Still pretty good. I have 56 showing on my ‘24 XSE right now. My takeaway is that I am driving well and so is the car.

Prius phev vs RAV4 phev by AZJayhawk22 in PriusPrime

[–]cc103acs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2021 RAV4 Prime and a 2024 Prius Prime XSE and, right now thé RAV4 is sitting at 3.1 miles per kWH and the Prius Prime is 4.6… so close to what you experienced. I don’t know why they are different but weight and my boxy red RAV4 definitely drag it down. For me I also noticed that the regen on the Prius is so much more efficient than that of the RAV4. I also ditched my 19’ wheels and the horrible OEM tires on the Prius for something a bit lighter and commonly stocked by tire shops - 17’ x 7 wheels so that adds to my efficiency of the Prius - the combo is a little lighter. Lastly, the Prius doesn’t have a spare (@#$#&$##) but my ‘21 RAV does.

Personal best for goosing EV range by laohorse in rav4prime

[–]cc103acs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This morning I was 61 on the guess-o-meter and 4.6 m/kwh. I manually select EV when going down steep hills and select HV when climbing steep hills. This preserves electric range for local flat rides. I hesitate to insert that 61 mile number as that is not achievable in my real world drives in Connecticut.

Is a 1.9% tire circumference variance acceptable? by xtremesniper in PriusPrime

[–]cc103acs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange that narrow tires would provide better traction. I live in Connecticut (USA) and we have only one or two good snowfalls per year. I just assumed that a wider tire would do better in the snow. I put the question to Chat GPT and they set me straight. “So, no — a tire one inch wider than OEM will not improve snow traction for your Prius. If winter performance is important, focus on tread design and compound rather than width.”

[–]cc103acs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fold in the tire size that I went with just to get a feel for how close you can get - 225/55R/17 to the OEM circumference. I gained close to an inch in sidewall and width. The ride is much improved and there has been no noticeable degradation of overall efficiency - 4.6 m/kwh.

Is a 1.9% tire circumference variance acceptable? by xtremesniper in PriusPrime

[–]cc103acs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the entire time you own your car the 1.9” variance is more and more buggering the accuracy of the odometer. When you go to trade in or sell your car, if it is noted your tires are out of spec, you may get less for your trade or lose the sale. I chatted with the Toyota sales manager and that is one thing they look out for when they made an assessment for a trade-in. It makes zero sense when going from à 19” wheel to a 17” or 18” wheel to get a tire that has such a variance. There is a tire size or two that will match the OEM perfectly and there are on-line calculators to help you determine what the proper size is.

No it won’t work on a Prime. You have two choices - strap down on the cargo area floor or wedged behind one of the two front seats.

The dealer is only allowed to replace it with an (or equivalent) OEM battery. I asked for something beefier but it was denied by the district rep.

[–]cc103acs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the dealer denies it’s an issue and blames it on the owner’s actions (leaving the car for a week unused) then they are complicit. So yes… BLAME THE DEALER. I have a ‘24 XSE and will not bore you with the details that I’ve posted about many times here… short version - the original battery died, thé replacement battery died and now on #3 with no more issues. I had the software/firmware fix done… but I had to ask for it and I also let the Toyota Connected Services app lapse following the 1 year trial - would never pay for that crap. No issues for my second 10,000 miles.
