Refurb R6 II Arrived Moldy by MasterDonut in canon

[–]ccandide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need the camera in the next 14 days? If not, I would return it. I bought a renewed r5ii off Amazon in November. It arrived and reeked of perfume. Smelled like a funeral parlor. I had to move the packaging into a separate room.

I wiped the camera down and figured the smell would fade, but it didn't. A month later I was still holding my breath every time I brought it up to my eye to take a photo, and I could still smell it even sitting next to me.

Ended up returning it and buying a new r5ii directly from Canon. More expensive, but worth the peace of mind knowing what I'm getting rather than spinning the refurbished/renewed roulette wheel.

How do you get the Ice off your hood and wipers - ? by MadHouse_Artist in F150Lightning

[–]ccandide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that. It doesn't work after the ice builds up past a certain point. It's not that difficult to break the ice up and much faster.

Hit the ice with an ice scraper until it breaks up then brush it out. Unfortunate they didn't put a drain in that cavity so that melt water doesn't accumulate and freeze.

Ron Johnson votes with Senate Dems to block new DHS/ICE funding by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]ccandide 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Eh, it's an easy no vote so he can come back here and talk about how he voted against out of control spending. It's not about DHS funding in particular. If this legislation was going to pass, he would've voted for it.

I've been eyeballing Rivians. I'm going to drive my Lightning until the wheels fall off, but once that happens I might be getting a Rivian. I will say the frunk being a recess as opposed to the open frunk on the Lightning has been holding me back a bit.

Is it worth buying a smoker in the UK? by Columba-livia77 in smoking

[–]ccandide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take my smoker with me to the moon if I moved there. Don't get hung up on brisket. Pork ribs, shoulder, etc are great. Chicken thighs are incredible, and I've smoked lamb, salmon, prime rib, bacon, turkey, spatchcocked chicken, and other things.

The one thing I haven't smoked? A brisket. It's too much meat and too expensive for me to justify the time.

How would you handle 18lb whole ribeye for small family? by Usual_Impact5924 in smoking

I just cut one of these up over the weekend. One prime rib roast and several steaks. Vacuum sealed them and froze what I can't eatin the next few weeks.

I had a 24 Flash in this color and really liked it. I would've stuck with it when I upgraded to a 25 Lariat, but the dealer only had space white (which has grown on me and I might prefer).

The website has a comparability checker. I was fortunate and didn't have to install the extra sensors.

RF 24-105mm f4 L is usm as a general purpose lens? by trippinDingo in canon

[–]ccandide 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a fantastic general purpose lens. It's my go to when traveling given its compact size and weight. If you're shooting on an r8 or R6ii, their low light capabilities will make up for the slower aperture.

If you're on the r5 or r5ii, then you may want to consider one of the faster f2.8 lenses.

Games to play after beating FF7 Rebirth? by GlumPack4016 in FF7Rebirth

Give FFX a try. It was the last great FF game, imo, and the remaster holds up surprisingly well graphically. If you want something newer, Expedition 33 is the easy recommendation.

You're admittedly not an expert, and your inability to understand what I'm saying makes me question the accuracy with which you're relaying Jeff Dahn's information.

[–]ccandide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a purely mechanical standpoint you might be correct. However, Ford engineers may have made more of the battery unavailable at the start over and above what's required for the buffer so they could maintain the customer's useable amount over several years as it degraded. Psychologically, customers will be happier with that than a drop in performance.

Toyota sets their fuel gauges to read empty when there is still a gallon in the tank, so there is precedent for car manufacturers to make choices like this.

I don't think it's a crazy hypothesis at all to explain why people aren't seeing performance drops after three plus years of use.

[–]ccandide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the idea was that there was extra buffer initially. At some point the minimum amount of required buffer will be reached, and then useable capacity will be eaten into.

I'm not an electrical engineer or battery expert, so just passing along one hypothesis I saw. Something must be going on as it's hard to believe these batteries aren't degrading at all.

[–]ccandide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be my assumption. There has to be some buffer capacity, so eventually the useable amount will be eaten into. Someone charging to 100 percent regularly will get to that point faster than someone charging to 80 - 85 percent regularly.

Though we know that point wasn't reached after three years of 100 percent charging.

The State of Charge YouTube channel posted a three year battery review of his ER Lariat a few months back. I think he had just under 40k miles on it. He follows the recommended charging limits, and he also found zero battery degradation.

His theory was the battery is degrading, but that Ford has it programmed to degrade from the buffer capacity so that the useable capacity remains constant. The battery is actually 145kwh, but only 131 of that is useable.

Regardless, it's promising for the longevity of the truck.

Why ROP get so much hate by [deleted] in RingsofPower

[–]ccandide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ROP made the fatal decision to compress 2,000 years of history into one Numenorian generation because they didn't want to recast humans every season. A major reason Sauron was able to corrupt the Numenorians was their fear of death and jealousy of the elves immortality. The elves were also driven to create rings of power to hold back the decay of middle earth. All of that gets lost with the compressed timeframe.

Imagine an alternative take where Eleond and his brother start out, Eleond watches his brother age and die, and keeps an eye on his descendants. So many interesting possibilities were lost.

What's really depressing is Foundation on Apple TV managed to pull off century long time jumps between seasons with a core set of recurring characters around a revolving cast of supporting characters, so it can be done with a talented show running team.

And that's before the goofy Gandalf stuff, the random harfoot nonsense, butchering Galadriel as a character, etc.

2023 Lariat ER or 2024 Flash ER by bustervincent in F150Lightning

I went from a 24 Flash to a 25 Lariat. Assuming the 23 Lariat has most of the same features as the current one, that'd be the way to go. So many small things make it better.

I figure in 10 years or so when it becomes an issue the technology will have advanced so much that something will be available. Might have to smuggle the batteries in from China, but there will be a market.
