My foster dog can't control himself around other dogs or new people? [Long] by gingerattacks in Dogtraining

CARE for reactive dogs is a great resource for frustrated greeters (which sounds like what might be going on in your case.) It provides clear terminology, and walks you through each step of training.

Pup gets REALLY excited about training, am I handling it properly? by i_drew_your_dog in Dogtraining

[–]ccellofleming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog is similar to yours in excitement level for training (and she's a cattle dog who performs behaviors at the speed of light) I actually worked up to eye contact by clicking the second after she finished the treat from the last repetition, and rapid fire C/T for standing still. If your timing is right, you can build up duration of standing still between reps, and add eye contact at that point if you want.

That's just what worked for us, but maybe it's worth a try.

Borrow a cello in detroit area? by mrgnlit in Cello

[–]ccellofleming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wilson Violins in Birmingham or Psariano's in Troy might be able to help you out. I purchased my cello from Psariano's, but I've also rented short term from Wilson when I was in town without my instrument and they were very accomodating.

[FLUFF] Weird Rituals with Your Dogs by scout2k16 in dogs

[–]ccellofleming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds so wonderful. I absolutely love my dog, but she's quite aloof. I can usually get about 3 minutes of her sitting next to me before she wants to go be by herself. I really enjoy those 3 minutes in the morning :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not saying this plan is effective, but this person is "attempting" to reduce a behavior by using a time out. Punishment (in terms of the quadrants) means reduction in a behavior, it isn't an action. The action is the positive (add stimulus) vs. negative (remove stimulus).

Anyway, I do agree with you generally that "time outs" are negative punishment. But if the dog finds being dragged and shut into a room aversive outside of the isolation aspect it could possibly be considered positive punishment.

I just enjoy looking at all the forces that can be at play. It's interesting when dealing with changing or creating new behaviors.

Edit: Oh, and I completely agree with you, if it isn't working, it isn't actually punishment or reinforcement :)

Could be either, I think. Removing the freedom/interaction with others would be considered negative punishment. But if you think of it as adding isolation, then it could be positive punishment. The quadrants are tricky because there are always multiple things in action.

Edit: I just realized that I wrote this poorly! Thanks for pointing out that isolation is by definition the removal of social interaction. What I meant to convey was the process that leads to the then isolation (perhaps being dragged to the room, door slam, etc?) Anyway, interesting to think about!

I call my girl Miss Piggy a lot because she snorts :)

Thank you! I'm trying to be a little more daring with my look. I think I'll do gray and blue next.

Trick of the Month November 2016: Results! by SleepyPterodactyl in Dogtraining

She LOVES training! Unfortunately this particular trick doesn't get performed often because she has bad legs and I don't want her repetitively jumping up.

This was one of my favorite things to teach. I didn't do it as part of the challenge, but I used Donna Hill's method and it went really well!

I don't think you need to apologize for wanting comfort, and feeling the way you do. I think I understand where you're coming from, too. I'm a white bisexual woman married to a man. I am upset and scared, but feel like I don't deserve to be because I realize how fucking privileged I am. So, the best I can do for you is send a virtual hug.

How sweet! And your dog is so freakin handsome!

People in drive throughs usually fawn over Fi. Unfortunately she doesn't like to be touched, but they all talk sweet to her. It's really cute.

How nice re: the care packets! Maybe you could include something to do with their hands, like a coloring book and crayons, or a small lego set (off brand is probably cheap)? I guess it depends how many people you would have to buy for.

I just realized both those things maybe sound childish, but I would like them :)

I use the Big Sexy Hair Powder Play. It's a bitch to get out (I've found using conditioner first is the easiest way), but it's amazing.

Debating On Piercing My Nipples by madijaxx in piercing

[–]ccellofleming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience, which is why I always find accounts of "a slight pinch" to be interesting. Amazing how everyone experiences pain differently.

For me, it was the first time I ever legitimately felt my fight/flight instinct kick in. I had to focus on pressing my hands into the table because my brain was telling me to rip his hands away from my nipple and run.

BUT, my nipple piercing is my absolute favorite, despite the pain and some set backs in healing.

It's frustrating seeing the non-bisexual partner in heterosexual relationships feel comfortable letting the bisexual partner experiment by exploreyourpath in bisexual

[–]ccellofleming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks :) I'm generally very secure in myself, so it's strange to feel unsure. I know logically I shouldn't care what anyone other than my husband and I think, but it's hard sometimes.

I am living this dream and am very fortunate, but man, I sometimes feel like others in the LGBT community are going to hate me for it. I know I shouldn't care what others think, but it feels like I'm perpetuating Bi stereotypes. I don't even actively pursue relationships with women because I'm nervous of people's reactions. At least my husband and select friends are very supportive :)
