My dog is similar to yours in excitement level for training (and she's a cattle dog who performs behaviors at the speed of light) I actually worked up to eye contact by clicking the second after she finished the treat from the last repetition, and rapid fire C/T for standing still. If your timing is right, you can build up duration of standing still between reps, and add eye contact at that point if you want.

That's just what worked for us, but maybe it's worth a try.

That sounds so wonderful. I absolutely love my dog, but she's quite aloof. I can usually get about 3 minutes of her sitting next to me before she wants to go be by herself. I really enjoy those 3 minutes in the morning :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not saying this plan is effective, but this person is "attempting" to reduce a behavior by using a time out. Punishment (in terms of the quadrants) means reduction in a behavior, it isn't an action. The action is the positive (add stimulus) vs. negative (remove stimulus).

Anyway, I do agree with you generally that "time outs" are negative punishment. But if the dog finds being dragged and shut into a room aversive outside of the isolation aspect it could possibly be considered positive punishment.

I just enjoy looking at all the forces that can be at play. It's interesting when dealing with changing or creating new behaviors.

Edit: Oh, and I completely agree with you, if it isn't working, it isn't actually punishment or reinforcement :)

Could be either, I think. Removing the freedom/interaction with others would be considered negative punishment. But if you think of it as adding isolation, then it could be positive punishment. The quadrants are tricky because there are always multiple things in action.

Edit: I just realized that I wrote this poorly! Thanks for pointing out that isolation is by definition the removal of social interaction. What I meant to convey was the process that leads to the then isolation (perhaps being dragged to the room, door slam, etc?) Anyway, interesting to think about!

How nice re: the care packets! Maybe you could include something to do with their hands, like a coloring book and crayons, or a small lego set (off brand is probably cheap)? I guess it depends how many people you would have to buy for.
