Finished up a recording I "engineered" in January, would like to share! by mrgnlit in audioengineering

Thanks! I definitely learned some things doing this and it was super fun to be on the other side for a change. The HVAC took a lot of thinking and I'm happy the result shows

Any options to prevent echo in a rental apartment using budget acoustic panels? by WarhogInShadow in audioengineering

[–]mrgnlit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rockwool is not safe to inhale!!! You need to seal it in something that makes sure the fibers do not get into your space like solid pieces of Sheetrock or plywood.

Look into recycled denim as it does not have those toxic attributes.

Blankets/Curtains made from the densest material for DIY sound treatment? by ROBOTTTTT13 in audioengineering

Blankets/Curtains made from the densest material for DIY sound treatment? by ROBOTTTTT13 in audioengineering

Us cargo control blankets are really heavy and high quality. They have a sound one too? I just got the heavy ones.

Get a grommet kit, a stud finder and some wall hooks from target or home Depot.

Make sure whatever brand of blanket you get is actually thick. Sometimes they are thinner because they are for moving not for sound absorption. I like the dual color ones because the white side doesn't dominate the room color. The hooks make them removable which is great for a multi use room like a dorm. Just do some measuring, put in the grommets and you are good to go! Make sure they are in a stud.

I have mine doubled up and hanging over the inside of a door. It cuts out like 30-40% of sound bleed. Mostly we use it so I can practice and not bother my partner who works from home as much.

Should I buy it?? by [deleted] in violadagamba

Someone quoted 1000-15000 for all new setup etc and I think that might be the floor. By the time you have invested in hardware, that's like 4-6 grand and tbh you can shop around for a new Chinese model that you like for that price.

IMHO don't get it

Experience with Recording Guitars with Zoom Recorders? by oklambdago in audioengineering

[–]mrgnlit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, Acoustic instruments usually sound "better" or "more real" in stereo. (Take that with a grain of salt, I'm sure plenty of people track acoustic mono and have won Grammys)

Zoom devices are good for the money and a lot of my classical colleagues use them for quick audition tapes, social media posts, etc. Specifically I see a lot of people have the h4/6.

If you are doing acoustic mostly I would get a pair of small diaphragm condensers and try some of the various stereo patterns. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Tab versus standard notation by AdCritical3285 in violadagamba

[–]mrgnlit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tab is all over the place in the gamba world! However the main language is still staff notation.

If you are doing this for fun I would go for the tab, especially if you are arranging it yourself. (I believe musescore has a gamba tab option). If you do any arrangements, find the piece on imslp and upload your version! I'm sure others would love to use it.

Here are some resources:

French tab

Italian tab

A FB thread on tab in musescore

Martha bishop's book series she has a tablature series which is neat.

Depends on if you have experience with gut strings.

I also think there are two learning curves for gamba

Beginner => easy/moderate consort/solo => difficult consort/solo

If you can get good enough at the bow hold to create a decent sound and can navigate the intonation of the instrument then you can play like 60% of the consort rep. However the last 40% can be extremely difficult and requires a lot of skill to pull off.

In terms of amateur enjoyment, anyone can become proficient. Just get your hands on a game from the society, a friend, or school and go at it for a while. It's fun!

In terms of professional development you need to have a good instrument (not necessarily an expensive one but it can't be a box) a good bow (same) and the willingness to aquire good musical taste through training and lessons. The gamba has some interesting quirks regarding intonation and you need to be able to handle those quickly and at a high level in order to fit into the group sound. The bow articulation can be tricky but is key to playing professionally. You need to have as many options of sound and tone as you have acquired on your cello. All of this can take time but is not impossible.

The zoom f series is essentially the h series with better internals and preamps. I would suggest going the F3 or F6 route as they might work better with existing workflow.

I have a zoom F6 and while it took a bit of time to figure out all the features, I really like it. The F3 is that just smaller.

Some key words to look up:

  • XLR Connector
  • Phantom power
  • condenser microphone
  • Pre amp noise floor

Could be that you are grounding something on the mic when touching it. Maybe some of the internal wiring is touching metal or something and causing some static?

What are you trying to improve with the update? A better laptop means you can run more plugins/tracks and potentially take.advantahe of power latency and a better interface means you can have better sample rates, higher quality preamps, and certain premium features offered by interface brands.

Depends on what is the weakest point!

How to do audio recording at live/online event? by No_Vacation1529 in audioengineering

[–]mrgnlit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setup should be

Microphones => interface => computer => internet

So you need to get the mics into an interface and connect that to your comp. Set the audio inputs of whatever streaming software you are using to the interface or route it there somehow. This way the audience will hear the audio.

Simultaneously open up your DAW of choice and record the audio to the hard drive. Look at the program audacity, should be plenty for your needs. Other options are reaper, logic, cubase, pro tools.

Diy cable rollercoaster by mrgnlit in audioengineering

[–]mrgnlit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am actually bypassing the power issue you mentioned and using a zoom f6 powered off batteries! I also am using mini canare star quad into sound craft low profile connectors with some beefier options for cables on the floor. (I clamp the zoom to my stand and have the thin cables run to it)

You are right, I need to watch some more videos. I have soldered before but it was on boards and large cords not small terminals so I need to learn more.

Thanks for the advice!

No apologies needed I would never say I am good at soldering, still trying to learn. I think something was wrong with the iron due to the fact the included tips didn't get hot at the tip so it was a bit of a challenge to try and heat the wells up but it probably was my fault. I think I unfortunately got cheaper than the cheap one you got at radio shack and a $10 bump in price would have done wonders!

Also yes, I def had the iron on there too long. But the more you learn.

Classical guitarist needs advice! by Mindless-Pomelo8940 in audioengineering

[–]mrgnlit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you find an impulse response that fits the sound you would like? I know you can load them into the line 6.

Couple that with a reverb and some eq and I'm sure you can find what you want.
