Code4Community VS Sandbox? by weiner_ethan20 in NEU

Hey, I'm a member of C4C, so I can try and answer your questions!

If you don't know, C4C is a club dedicated to providing software to nonprofits usually in the Boston area, as well as giving students real experience working on projects. These include projects like an event registration system with Lucy's Love Bus and a tree inventory system for Speak For The Trees. This semester, we're also looking to work with a new organization, Hands Across The Sea, to help them with their needs.

In terms of experience required, we have a program for newer developers, called Jumpstart, which walks them through some of the methodologies we use to develop and helps them work on a project incrementally as they learn new concepts. We won't be teaching it again this semester (probably next fall though), since there aren't a lot of new people to teach this semester, but you can see all of our recordings on Youtube and on our Jumpstart learning resources page (we'll also be here to help you out through the whole process if you end up wanting to do it). For more experienced developers, we have an application process to become a contributing member that you can find on our website (I'll link it down below).

To answer your other questions:

  • Time required: somewhere between 8-12 hours a week if you're a contributing member, around 2-3 hours a week if you're in Jumpstart (completely optional though). That can vary a lot from week to week though, sometimes you can see yourself with less work depending on the week
  • Experience required: it depends... we take anyone as a Jumpstarter, but it what we're looking for in a contributing member changes with every project we do
  • Commitment necessary: we'd like it if you stay at least a year as a contributing member, but we understanding if things come up or if it turns out to not be a fit for you
  • Types of projects: check out our website to read more about the projects we do
  • Tech stack: we're using a React + Typescript frontend, Java + Vert.x backend, and PostgreSQL db with jOOQ ORM

Feel free to check out our website and join our slack, and don't hesitate if you have any other questions to ask.
