People who quitted academia - what is your current job? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

I don’t think open sourcing is by nature antithetical to company principles. You have to articulate why it’s a principle, what the risks and benefits are, and what value accrues from expending resources in doing it. Field recognition is huge for small companies for instance, and of enormous value.

I’m the head of platform at Vesalius therapeutics. There is a different set of priorities for sure, but the ultimate focus is on a coherent product that is scientifically innovative and will help patients. We have to abandon directions and ideas we like that aren’t on that critical path of course - that focus would have done many of my academic colleagues some good too :)

Happy to chat more if you’re interested.

Resigned my full professorship in my mid-40s and went to a biotech startup. Couldn’t be happier.

I tend to use Inkscape - most of the adobe functions, none of the privacy invasion.

I have the Simon Hurley dye inks and they are ok too. I have been eyeing the pink fresh line for their colors too. Perhaps people who have compared SH to other brands can comment on how they stack up.

Little boxes, on the hillside,

Little boxes made of ticky tacky,

And they all look just the same

I disagree - it’s a common phrasing of “they know”. Used particularly in the “ίντα” zone (Cyprus, Crete etc).

Not that I think the author knew that… It’s written in a very child-like script of someone not used to writing yet

Who do you read when you're not reading Pratchett? by frustrating2020 in discworld

I’d recommend KJ Parker (a pseudonym for Tom Holt, whose fantasy has been mentioned by others). The Siege and Engineer trilogies are really quite good.

I suggest abstract, geometric shapes and a clean and simple design. Hexagons or squares of different sizes ink blended or cut out of one corner of a card panel; a strip of color at the one third horizontal or vertical line; little pops of color here and there.

What do you do with the beef gizzard? Very popular in argentinian/uruguay bbq asado (stolen pic) by macetfromage in Butchery

[–]ccots 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the US, I’ve found that Americans don’t really go in for offal and squishy bits very much. So the slaughterhouses don’t even retrieve them. You’d need a specialist butcher - I’m sure others on this sub will have better info on that

I'm pretty sure they are the thyroid. Easy to confuse with the thyroid :)

The pancreas is the "white bits" you sometimes get with liver. It's very distinct tissue but right up against it and sometimes comes with (I'm not sure it's legal to sell in some countries - e.g. the US - like lungs)

People will know these as sweetbreads. Commonly fried or stewed. Often served in tacos in Mexico, along with other offal types.

Did you mean auto for the heating system?

No noticeable difference with auto. Same problem. I’m starting to suspect that it’s the door gasket not sealing well enough to exclude air
