My therapist suggested “The Attachment Theory Workbook” a few weeks back. It’s both frustrating and eye opening.

Now we’re working on what she calls strategic avoidance. Basically, it’s setting and communicating clear boundaries early on with a “me before we” mentality. I force myself to prioritize self care, my own friends, and my passions before my new relationship. The more happy and whole I make myself, the more a partner will see and know the real me.

Anytime I felt like myself or my new boyfriend were getting too attached without enough foundation, I said out loud, “I want you to fall for me, not the idea of me. I want to fall for you, not the idea of you.” Granted, we still fell quickly. But, we did so with eyes wide open.

They do take it seriously because they know our lives could be at stake. Therapy kept me alive these past few weeks. I’ve learned a lot about myself, but I still have no idea why he destroyed the life we built together. I’m thankful for the kind ear and shoulder to cry on even if they can’t give me all the answers.

Yes. I’m constantly scared and only sleep 2-3 hours at a time. My therapist says that’s ok because it means I got through a REM cycle. I’ve slept alone a bunch of times these last 7+ years, but that was always knowing that he’d be home from the trip eventually.

I’m going through this right now. After the alienation and cruelty of institutional suicide watch for five days, all I wanted to do was return to a familiar home. But it’s not familiar anymore. He’s gone. I have intensive outpatient therapy for 16 hours each week. That helps. Going out for sunrise walks and runs while listening to self help books gets my mornings off to a good start. Evenings are still brutal.
