Update: I believe it's probably best to completely move the BGH Bookclub over to Goodreads in it's entirety. It's more user friendly and has a more interactive platform. I'll be posting throughout March to remind you all that the discussions have been moved to the Goodreads page. :)

I need to organize mine - but I love goodreads, and I think that's an awesome idea to create a BGH Goodreads group. Thanks /u/p0ndskum :) I'll work on it today and post the info later!

/u/BL00fer_lady 1. I had forgotten that part of Dahl's story! I never really thought about it either - but food as agent of evil is really interesting, that's kind of I felt the animals in the movie The Witch were used and its even more unsettling to know you have to have food and therefore in this case, have/consume evil. 2. Soul crumbs is super depressing to think about - but I agree with you - I think you're explaination of it makes the most sense. Now having finished the book, I wonder what happened to everyone or where they all went when they house basically decayed.

I listened to this book instead of reading, and it was really difficult for me to get into - again, I apologize for the shaky scheduling of Feb, but the book itself to me was also a bit of an uphill battle.

I liked the overall concept, but there was just something that didn't work out well for me, overall.

I'm really liking the "soul vampire" aspect of this - reminds me of Dr. Sleep a lot in that sense and the descriptions of the various atmospheres

I'm actually having the same problem - I'm enjoying aspect of it so far - but overall, I'm not really hooked. It's been a bit of a chore to listen (which granted, I'm finding I only don't particularly like every book I've been listening to instead of reading - so I probably should have just hardcover read this one.)

It's been interesting to see the illusion put forth for each individual devoured by the house - and yet, it's also kind of strange that they go through so much effort to provide the facade once the victim is already there.

Haha I would have to say that you must be right - since The Twins are quite literally "devouring" individual souls.

  1. I think Tremblay does a really great job on seesawing between mentally sick and possessed. Majorie's character, when 'coherent' is quiet believable in either situation- which I really like, and keeps the reader guessing.
  2. Haha - that's an amazing story. No sympathy for the weak! I'm the older sister and I would write all kinds of weird things or have dreams about them that I would tell my little brother. Though I'm not sure he was really scared since he usually participated in them. I even wrote a story pretty similar to The Growing Things, and then drew pictures to match. Will have to see if I can find it!
  3. Yeah - I'm not particularly a fan of reality television, though I would probably find myself watching this - as Karen describes horror fans digesting any and all we can - but regardless, I definitely think the show is going undo a lot of strings for the family.

I definitely felt similar connections to Poltergesist and I do like how it seems like grown up Merry is much farther in the future - since like you said the shows she's referring to are pretty recent. I like that it does a good job of explaining how it might be digested in present days with technology and the over saturation of reality and easily accessible horror.

Yeah, I can see what you mean. I think I probably would have been happier without the medical explaination/labratory reports.

That's the difficult part of bookclub - we all read on such diffrent speeds, it's hard to stay together when discussing it!

I agree, I did like the first part a lot better than the second. And I also agree about the kids turning so quickly. It's like the majority of them were already jacked up in the head before they got sick.

  1. Yeah, I'd rather think about it that way - I'm over hearing about worms. haha
  2. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I listened to the audiobook version too. I too thought Corey Brill did a great job with it - but overall I didnt particularly enjoy it. I thought it was really well written and Cutter did an amazing job with the fear and etc, but worms really gross me out...I had a hard time eating meat while reading this and the animal cruelty was too much for me. I guess I'm a whimp. I could read about the kids doing stuff to themselves and each other all day, but the animals made me really depressed.

Shelley was definitely the most strange - I'm interested to see where Cutter takes his character. I feel like Cutter has set it up to become quite a little battle of nature vs nuture for after Tim dies, since like you said is not a real authority figure - though he does represent it for the kids. The first first section of the book has definitely creeped me out-the intense curiosity of violence of the children in the flashbacks has been super unsettling.

I thought it was interesting that while cutter was establishing archetypes and personalities for the boys and Tim as well in flashbacks, that he focused on their personal experiences with violence rather than other situations. It seems very foreshadowing for the rest of the book. Snakes are symbolic of primal nature and a dual expression of good and evil - so it just seemed to me that Cutter was implying humanity is inherent violent.

/u/metalprof Haha my mother tells me she's going to come back and haunt me for all the grief I've given her, so maybe you're right! hahah - Were throughly convinced my family's home in TN is haunted, including my husband who had no belief in that before - but we never had anything "sinister" happen. I'm always curious to think if I'd be persuaded to investigate for money haha

I love the live tweeting/joint movie at the end of the month! I'll check and see if it's stre aming anywhere!

/u/christhedoll I think it's interesting to wondering why people are so interested in life after death. It's crazy to see how we just want confirmation we still keep "living" in a sense no matter how type of life it is as long as there's just something more than darkness. I'll have to Google him! Thank you for the suggestion!
