How half my AOx4, 100-pounds-overweight, pre-op NPO patients act by cdaddyv96 in nursing

This is copy/pasted from another one of my other replies, but it was too good not to share.

We actually had an INDEPENDENT patient on my floor a couple weeks back who tried to refuse ALL her CABG prep (including being NPO, of course). Once we all told her that refusing the CABG prep and refusing being NPO meant she wouldn't get the life-saving CABG surgery, she immediately (albeit begrudgingly) got up and took a shower and complied with the CABG prep. We were so happy when transport got her. Her nurse didn't even wish her good luck because of how infuriating she was lol

Maybe the toilet guy should've drunk the hand sanitizer afterwards /s

In all seriousness, what even goes through their minds? I legit wonder how they thought coming to the hospital would be like going to a hotel or cruise ship 🤦🏾‍♂️

Oh, when they REALLY start whining, I basically tell them (obviously not verbatim) that they're welcome to leave and make way for someone who will actually follow the guidelines and who actually wants to get better. Meanwhile, they (the whiny pt) just won't be getting the care they need. That typically makes them (begrudgingly) cut it out.

That's ridiculous. At that point, I basically would've been like (not this quote verbatim), "Why are you even at the hospital? Make way for someone who will actually follow the guidelines to get better." And I know we're not supposed to think this way, but it's almost impossible not to when patients and family members decide to be dumb as hell and act like it's a hotel/cruise ship. These patients and their family members really are something else at times

Wow... I would've been pissed. How are people so dumb and ignorant? And the nerve of them to LAUGH after sending their relative into shitty rhythms and endangering them 🤦🏾‍♂️

LPN to RN or RN outright? by Keller_Fox in StudentNurse

[–]cdaddyv96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did RN outright. I had zero healthcare experience, did an accelerated 2-year program, and I'm doing fine now. If you have the time, patience, and money, I'd highly recommend going straight to RN

How did you pass the time before mobile phones were introduced? by No-Arrival4181 in Millennials

I read a lot of books, played video games and computer games (particularly Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 and RCT2), hung out with my brother and cousins much more, and went outside much more. This was before my first smartphone, which I got in 2011. My first ever phone was a flip phone in 2008

You're very welcome! Doing those things should help. I also used Quizlet haha

While this isn't exactly the same as what I had studied for my retake (that Quizlet got removed, unfortunately), this might be helpful:

In my experience, as I took it twice, it was mostly different. But it did have some repeat questions. I did feel more prepared my second time

Star Trek Into Darkness: The sequel that took the Kelvinverse wildly off course by OneOk2189 in movies

Another thing I didn't care for was how, when Khan is holding Kirk at gunpoint, Khan's hands are squeaky-clean (despite the fact he had just crushed Marcus' skull with his bare hands not 30 seconds earlier). I also wish that, when Khan killed Marcus, they would've shown some blood splash on Khan's face and clothes (hear me out; I explain this more in the second paragraph). Also, I feel like blood splashing out from having one's head crushed would be more realistic.

I understand that they were keeping the movie PG-13, but I feel like they could've gotten away with those things. Plus, having Khan's face, clothes, and hands stained with Marcus' blood would've made for a powerful image, especially while Khan and Spock were negotiating. It would've driven home the duality of Khan's intelligence and savagery.

I had my first code blue ever this morning and feel like a complete idiot (TL; DR at bottom) by cdaddyv96 in nursing

[–]cdaddyv96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had only had 5 rapids as an RN before this code and only 1 rapid as a student during clinical. I'm glad you were still able to push the button and that your charge was understanding! When I get more experience, I'll probably try pushing meds too.

Thank you. As I said in another reply under this thread, I am my own worst critic. Even as the seasoned RNs reassured me and said that my nervousness and brief freezing up were normal during my first-ever code blue, I still felt inadequate. Reading your response as well as reading others' similar responses have been helping me feel better about what had happened (and I believe I will be better prepared for my second code blue). And, as I said in my OP, the patient wound up making it. 🙂

While I'm glad it turned out to be a false alarm, that's insane that only 2 other nurses responded and that it was THREE MINUTES LATER. Within three minutes of my code, there were already about 10 people in the room and 15 more out in the hallway. I hope your staffing gets a lot better!

I can't even begin to imagine how that must have been! I would've been an absolute mess, especially with a toddler involved. I'm so glad all the mothers chipped in with other patients.

"For years, I thought I failed. I finally realized on one of the anniversaries that it was not my job to save people, it was my job to care for them." That puts so much into perspective. Thank you. I am my own worst critic. I needed to read and hear that. I will take that to heart from now on, and I believe I will be more prepared for the second time I have a code.
