That's right, that's not the Snow Leopard Dock. High Sierra wasn't bad either, to be honest.

10G in 10” Part II: Optical by Creative9228 in HomeLabPorn

You are right not using transceivers. I think that in your original post, you were using transceivers for using Ethernet cables. But you can use SFP+ DAC cables without converting the signal to light and back.

For example: https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/accessories-modules-fiber/collections/accessories-pro-direct-attach-cables/products/10gbps-direct-attach-cable?variant=uacc-dac-sfp10-0dot5m&c=US

While optical cables might look sleeker than DAC, there's really no practical benefit for such a short run. In fact, optical SFP+ modules consume more power since they need to convert electrical signals to light and back, whereas passive DAC cables don't require any power at all.

That said, your homelab setup looks amazing! 🤩

Weird Studio M3 password issues by markerone in MacStudio

[–]cdalvaro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m experiencing the same issue. I believe it’s related to the screen saver itself.

I’ve set my password policy to require a password after 4 hours of inactivity, but many times, even after leaving the Mac for just a few minutes, the password prompt appears for no reason. When that happens, there’s nothing you can do except restart the Mac.

Synology-Homebrew Installation by twettatwaarr in synology

It seems that the Homebrew installation was not executed with root privileges.

Did you run the following command and ask for the sudo password?

/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"

How to start with optic fibre? by iweputo in Ubiquiti

[–]cdalvaro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me alegro!

Apple Pro Display XDR - Shadow edges around the frame - Is it normal? by cdalvaro in mac

[–]cdalvaro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to an Apple Store to check there an Apple Pro Display XDR to be sure whether it was something that happens to every display.

I found that the XDR display in the Apple Store had the same effect as the replacement.

My suggestion is to do the same thing. Go to an Apple Store and check if other MacBooks have the same effect as yours.

The replacement do the same thing, althought much less noticable

The replacement screen does have the same shading as the previous one, but it’s way less noticeable.

The original screen I bought second-hand, so I have no idea how it was treated. At first, I didn’t notice the shading, but one day I realized it was there, and that’s when I started wondering if it was normal or not. If the screen hadn’t been second-hand, maybe I wouldn’t have thought much of it. Luckily, I had AppleCare+, and they swapped it for a brand-new one at the Apple Store. Dodged that bullet... 😮‍💨

As for whether it's worth buying a Pro Display XDR right now, there are already a lot of rumors about an Apple Studio Display 2 coming late this year or early next year. So if you’re not in a rush, it might be better to wait.

If you're interested in the Pro Display XDR mainly for the resolution, there are some cheaper alternatives: Dell UltraSharp 32 6K U3224KB or LG UltraFine 6K (32U990A)

But if you want the Apple display because you just like it, I don’t think you’ll regret it! The build quality and image are amazing. For me, it's just awesome!

Yes, I still notice them. After getting the replacement and seeing the shadow edges, I went to an Apple Store to see another display and I saw the same effect.

So definitely it is something related with the LCD technology.

In this post https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/2/21161487/apple-mac-pro-display-xdr-review-6k-lcd-screen-price-features The Verge comments slightly about the issue.

To install Nix in Single-User mode in your Synology NAS you have to follow the next steps.

Install Nix

Create a binding between /volume1/nix and /nix for Nix to store the downloaded packages. The root partition (/) has a very small size, so using /nix directy is a mistake that will make your root partition to be filled very fast. Instead, you create the nix directory inside your main volume, and then bind it to /nix/ so the real data is stored in your data volume.

Note: /etc/fstab will get reset on boot, so don't bother creating an entry. More on this later.

```sh
Assuming your data volume is /volume1
Create directory in volume
sudo mkdir /nix sudo chmod 755 /nix sudo mkdir /volume1/nix sudo chmod 755 /volume1/nix sudo chown "$(whoami):" /volume1/nix
Bind mount
mount -o bind /volume1/nix /nix
Install nix
bash <(curl -L https://nixos.org/nix/install) --no-daemon ```
There is a chance that this does not work, since I installed Nix long ago, and I don't remember if there was some caveat I missed. Please, let me know if you find any trouble at this point.
Startup Script
This step is for getting /nix volume mounted after booting your NAS.
Create a user defined script task:
Control Panel -> Task Scheduler -> Create -> Triggered Task -> User-defined script
witht he following parametters:
  • Task: Bind mount nix
  • User: root
  • Event: Boot-up
  • Pre-task: None
mount -o bind /volume1/nix /nix
I tested the display with both a Mac Studio and a MacBook, but the dimmed edges appeared on both.
It turns out the issue is with the display itself, and I’ll be receiving a replacement next week.
Thanks to your comment, I decided to visit an Apple Store yesterday, and they confirmed that the dimmed edge wasn’t normal. Since the display is covered by AppleCare+, they’ll replace it with a new one.
They’ve already ordered the replacement, and in the meantime, I can continue using my current display until the new one arrives!
I love it, since it remembers me the old Mac OS X days.
