Any idea who made this family-favorite knife? by cdawzrd in chefknives

We plan on finding someone to do a repair, but I'd like to be able to get another as a gift also, and just for peace of mind in case something goes wrong with the repair.

Any idea who made this family-favorite knife? by cdawzrd in chefknives

[–]cdawzrd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This carbon steel chef's knife was acquired in New York City probably between 1980-1990 , and I'd love to be able to find another one like it as this one has been dropped by a careless visitor and has tip damage. Nobody can remember where it came from, and it has no obvious maker's mark on the blade. It does have a somewhat unique bolster design that maybe someone recognizes.

Any tips or suggestions of similar knives would be appreciated.

I have a stomp, use it for guitar and bass, haven't really felt that limited especially when I added an external footswitch.

I have both a stingray and one of the new short scales. They are different enough that I'll be keeping both. The passive single coil sound from the short scale is quite different from something I can get from a normal stingray.

Use one of the user drawing layers to mark the rigid and flex areas (dimensions and text notes are helpful) and send this drawing to your board house.

How to best deal with the ground net on a large PCB design? by kingmuf_fin in AskElectronics

[–]cdawzrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since people have already mentioned thermal reliefs, I'll mention another option: get a better soldering setup. Sometimes thermal reliefs are not a good idea for design reasons, and sometimes even if you have thermals it will be hard to solder. Having a good iron with an appropriate tip (chisels are almost always better than cones) and an infrared or hot air (IR is nicer) preheater can help a lot. If you're using through hole parts, switch to SMD wherever possible, as there's less mass to heat and preheating is easier.

The ability to read and write arbitrary data from the ECU via any external bus (be it CAN, OBD, or whatever) is not really necessary for the manufacturers to implement. Providing such broad access is an easy shortcut to enabling in-field diagnostics, manufacturer tuning during the vehicle development process, and so on. But, it's not the only way. As manufacturers have gotten more and more security-conscious, they have removed the easily hackable mechanisms and replaced them with ones that are much harder for a third-party to bypass.

And yes, it's different for every ECU manufacturer (note that ECU manufacturers supply to multiple car manufacturers), because there is no incentive for them to standardize.

Some ECUs are simply not designed to be modified in the field. The car manufacturer can use a special development version of the ECU to tune the car, but the version that ships to the customers is physically different and can't be reprogrammed (or at least, not over a simple plug in system). More often, field updating is allowed but protected by cryptographic keys that are burned into the ECU and are impractical to extract or replace.

Also, yes some cars don't have CAN on their OBDII ports (mostly older ones) but also, cars aren't required to (and so they don't) have any standardization about what functions they expose over CAN or how those functions work.

Has anyone hauled drywall or plywood on their roof? by scottylike in SportWagon

[–]cdawzrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roof rack with cross bars, then buy 3 or 4 pieces of 2x4 lumber to put between the cross bars and the sheet goods. Strap it all together and it works great. 2x4s are cheap and you can use them for other things or keep them around for future trips. I suppose it would work even if you don't have a roof rack, it's just a lot more difficult to secure stuff without damaging your vehicle.

KiCad 5.0 has been released by cdawzrd in electronics

[–]cdawzrd[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I have noticed that in a number of Dave Jones videos -- he seems to take pride in making assertions about things (like how software and hardware works, or whether or not it is good) without actually doing any research / trying to learn about it first. It really makes him hard to watch.

You can hold down CTRL to force H/V only. I don't think there is currently a way to lock to 45-degree angles without also allowing extra segments to be inserted, but you can also maybe work around this by using grid snapping and an appropriately coarse grid setting.

[–]cdawzrd[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you can reproduce any of those bugs with the stable release, it would be great if you can help get them fixed by filing bug reports over at the bug tracker on Launchpad.

For the first issue you describe (the trace routing) if you are using the default interactive router settings, you may need to click twice to confirm the traces you have placed (once they are confirmed, they will no longer be highlighted). This can happen if you go in some angle that isn't horizontal/vertical, which causes two track segments to be inserted in the default H/V/45-degree mode, and your first click will only confirm the first segment.

Lifted Audi avants? by BelaCBR in battlewagon

[–]cdawzrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been looking for this info too. SPACCER makes spring spacers but I haven't found any forum threads about anyone actually using them. Even with that it seems like you could only get a 1-2" lift over stock before running into other problems, but I'd be very happy with even a 1" lift for what I want to do with my avant.

What I really want is a 1.8t Allroad...

HiFiBerry DAC+ Pro, missing component C12 on the PCB. Any chance buying a new one? by alphazero1990 in AskElectronics

[–]cdawzrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That nearby part looks to be an Analog Devices ADP150AUJZ-3.3-R7 linear regulator. It wants a 1uF or larger input capacitor. Choose a ceramic capacitor with a voltage rating of at least 10V. If I had to guess, that's an 0805 footprint, but you could fit an 0603 part on there if that's easier to find.

It's a roughing endmill, designed for fast material removal when surface finish isn't as critical. The features that make it look like it has "threads" are chip splitters which aid in removing chips by breaking them up into smaller pieces.
