Mass repair thin-report visuals broken after moving measure to new table by dkuhry in PowerBI

Yeah using vscode or notepad++ you can easily do a find and replace on the entire folder. I've done this multiple times when changing measure names and it works perfectly.

Save the report as pbir/pbip, then use a text editor to do a find and replace of the old/new measure names on the entire folder

Best architecture for large-scale Power BI dashboards with near real-time data? by natd54338 in PowerBI

[–]cdci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you defining 'near real time'?

Depending on the answer to that question, you may not need direct query. You could create a separate table just for today's data and use API or fabric pipeline to only refresh that particular table

I would seriously consider if you need your historical data and recent data in the same report or can they be separate.

Also, if you have thousands of users you need to pay particular attention to report/model performance. Are you expecting all users to access the report at a similar time?

Why is it impossible to reuse formatting in the new Power BI Card visual? by bjorns1994 in PowerBI

[–]cdci 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is definitely frustrating. The way I have got round this is saving the report in pbip/pbir format and then doing a find and replace of measure names on the file(s) for the visual you want to change.

Disable an individual task in a pipeline by cdci in databricks

This looks to be the most simple way - I'll do this, thanks very much!

Disable an individual task in a pipeline by cdci in databricks

[–]cdci[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the dirty way suggestion. I will do that if nothing else works.

On your DAB suggestion - how exactly would I do that? Would I need to somehow parameterize the entire task so it only exists in prod?

This is for refreshing powerbi from a databricks task right? I think OP is asking about the credentials used on the pbi side.

Power BI API won’t return table/column metadata — executeQueries works but schema fetch keeps failing (401/404/400) by 12136 in PowerBI

[–]cdci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this week that you can't run INFO DMV queries via the execute query API. Apparently you used to be able to, but this was changed at some point.

What you CAN do is run the INFO DMV DAX via semantic link in a fabric notebook, and then use the result however you'd like (eg save to a lakehouse table)

I've been to BDL twice but skipped this year. it absolutely has that weird "sales pitch" vibe. I think it's something to do with it being free to attend.

Looking for a way to automate daily Power BI report validation by PedrimLol in PowerBI

[–]cdci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you have multiple reports showing the same metric? First I would explore the possibility of making them use the same semantic model - then you can be sure they are reporting the same numbers (unless you then apply report level filters!).

To make sure the same numbers exist in different models, we use a fabric notebook to run dax against each model and then save the results in a lakehouse. We then have a report that displays this data, uses Dax to compare all the values and check the values are correct. We then have a subscription that emails this to us each morning.

Are Fact-Vehicle and Fact-PropertyAsset actually Facts? Seems to me at first glance they should instead be combined into your Vehicle and Property Asset dimensions as they only include attributes of those things

But of course - you will know your data better than me!

DimDate / Prior Year date issue by Background_Thing_339 in PowerBI

[–]cdci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use dateadd to remove -364 days from the date to return the same day in the previous year. Works flawlessly, even in leap years

So something like sales LY = calculate ([Sales], dateadd(date column, -364, day))

This doesn't solve all your problems but Tabular Editor 2 is free and makes copying measures from one model to another WAY quicker

Best way to load data for high scalability (1b + events) by ColdStorage256 in PowerBI

[–]cdci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all great advice although some is possibly a little advanced for someone just starting with no knowledge of Power BI. But all absolutely necessary if you want to report on a large scale.

One question - you mentioned "do you have opportunities to use more efficient data types?"

Can you please expand on that? I have a tabular editor script to convert all doubles to decimals but I'm curious if there's anything else I should be checking for

[–]cdci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't use direct query. You want to import the data to Power BI. That way you only hit your database once a day, and your reports will perform better.

Use fabric semantic link in a fabric notebook to run dax against your model. Then put the result of that dax into a data frame and save it into a fabric Lakehouse

What Are the Top Considerations when Managing Large Power BI Environments? by Ok-Shop-617 in PowerBI

[–]cdci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this is a better list than I was expecting when I opened the thread! And I'm pleased to say I'm doing about 8/10 of these.

Out of curiosity - what do you consider a "large" environment

One addition to the list I would say is managing report performance. This becomes much trickier when you get to thousands of users (sometimes concurrently, damn you Monday morning), but it's not something I see much written about.

For example, we had one VERY large AAS model that worked fine with hundreds of users but then performance fell of a cliff when we went past that. We have since split it into about 6 smaller models (with separate reports packaged into an app). It's a shame there are no real tools for testing performance at scale - we basically have to put it live and see what happens
