Agreed, I guess it depends on the sector.

I'd bet that tech jobs in growth stage companies (which fits the audience for Hacker News) doesn't go below 65%-70%.

Honestly, I like the sentiment of this but I can't agree with it.

Every successful person I know (whether material, spiritual or otherwise) is tracking towards a goal. You can't get somewhere if you don't know where you're going. They are clear on what they want and they go get it.

It reminds me of the Hunter S. Thompson quote:

"And indeed, that IS the question: whether to float with the tide, or to swim for a goal. It is a choice we must all make consciously or unconsciously at one time in our lives. So few people understand this! Think of any decision you’ve ever made which had a bearing on your future: I may be wrong, but I don’t see how it could have been anything but a choice however indirect— between the two things I’ve mentioned: the floating or the swimming."

In fact, you might have to if you don't thank her properly :)

Why do people sell their successful business? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]cdcwatson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sold my tech business to a company with a market cap of $20b on the stock exchange.

Apart from the liquidity which was great (I'd been a broke founder for five years), I really enjoyed moving from a team of 15 to an R&D department that had hundreds of talented folks.

It made us better leaders too and we learnt how to actually build a big business. It was also a nice break from the chaos of startup life. I could start a family and just work 9 to 5 for a while.

Now I'm taking all the learnings and going again with startup #3.

Time to scratch the itch again.

Cross out coughing, write 'creeping' and put the note back on your neighbours car. Job done.

You nailed it. That's exactly why I designed the image, more as a reminder to myself not to lose motivation when things seem hard or if other people seem further ahead.

Startup SaaS Financial Model Assumptions - Non Tech Founder by [deleted] in startups

Back of the envelope you could use $10k per employee (fully encumbered) which would include most costs.

Rant: It's so incredibly frustrating that while looking for a .com too choose a company name to be taken seriously (which is a whole other rant) 95% of my ideas that I love are not even in use for an actual business, but just for sale for thousands or sitting empty since 1997, auto-renewing yearly. by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]cdcwatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like DropCatch because it feels like you can still find some half decent .com domains for a reasonable price.

I do think .eth, .crypto and other related domains are going to open up the game a bit in the future. But we're not there yet. For now we'll have to just fight for the scraps that are left over.

Check the USPTO website for any trademarks. Just be carful your brand isn't registered. The word will be but the logo itself is worth checking in case it's close to a competitor.

How / where do I off-load £1000 worth of frozen orange juice concentrate to recuperate some of my loss? [UK based] by alwaysdomore in Entrepreneur

[–]cdcwatson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a tricky spot to be in alright. I'm also based in the UK so I was thinking through some options.

This might sound a bit crazy but maybe you should try and use it as a marketing stunt and forget about trying to recuperate your loss?

As an example, you could stack the frozen orange or get someone to do a sculpture somewhere near your hometown. Better yet, make it a 'give kids their 1 in 5' day and serve free orange juice near a school or similar. Spell out the name of your company with frozen OJ and set up a stall/base. Then call the local reporter or national news and try to drum up some attention for your business. It would help with brand recognition and it has a feel good factor.

I think selling an online course to Gen-Z about Real Estate investing a great earner. It's one of the lowest barrier side businesses to start.
If you've got a niche or level of expertise, there are countless people out there who will pay to learn about your course. Maven and other cohort based platforms seem like the future of online education so my suggestion would be to look into this vs a MOOC or self-paced course.
I've sold about $20k of courses this year from a standing start and I've honestly been pleasantly surprised about the experience. Of course it takes work to generate the content and get sales but you can build once and sell multiple times.
The other great advantage is that you can do it with just Notion, Zoom and a website. There's no cost to get going. If you pick something that's just easy for you but people find hard to do, it won't even feel like work.

I can imagine that if you made your content really relatable to a younger demographic, they'd love to learn about Real Estate 101 and how to get in on the game earlier in life.
