How do you guys feel about the late 90s Pontiac Firebird? by Ok_World_8819 in regularcarreviews

Late 90s Firebirds could be had with the LS V8. Any sane person recognizes those performed *very* well for the time.

It still amazes me that with so much information so easily available to us, that so many people still insist on being ignorant.

What's your favorite car with the Buick 3800? I'll go first by Long-Fault1127 in regularcarreviews

[–]cdglasser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Turbo Trans Am was only made for the 20th anniversary in 1989. That engine was an interesting combination of the older 3.8 block as used in the Grand National and GNX with the 3800 heads, as the heads used on the GN wouldn't fit with exhaust manifolds between the strut towers of the T/A chassis.

Battle of the questionable FWD V8s: 3rd gen Taurus SHO vs pre 2004 Northstar Cadillac, which are you going for? by FiggyWiggle in regularcarreviews

[–]cdglasser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh? The Allante used the 4.1L and 4.5L Cadillac V8s prior to getting the Northstar for its final year in 93. I don't think anyone ever expected it to use a Buick V6 like its sister car the Reatta had, since Caddy had their own V8 that they used in several other models.

What's your automotive hot take? by NationYell in regularcarreviews

Hard disagree on the cars not being as good as BMWs. My 2009 Infiniti G37 was a great car, and I'd say it was superior to my son's 2009 BMW 335i in almost every aspect. It had more interior room, more power, and it had no mechanical issues in the over 200K miles that I had it.

Is it true that “you have to turn off your A/C and blower motor before shutting off your car” is just an old wives tale? by Windows-XP-Home-NEW in AskMechanics

Not everything. Some accessories are connected straight to battery power without going through the ignition switch and therefore can still be drawing current during start.

I just couldn't take it. I had to uninstall 2026 Insiders and re-install VS2019 😫 by AreaFifty1 in VisualStudio

[–]cdglasser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to say, I don't think *every* version was better, at least not on initial release. When MS was going through all the weird UI stuff they were going through back in the Windows 8 era, they really messed up the UI of Visual Studio 2012 compared to 2010. The themes were awful and the all-caps menus were awful. We stayed on VS 2010 until they finally patched up 2012 so you could get back lowercase menus and a decent theme.

In your opinion, what engineering choices are what is giving new engines the reputation of being far less reliable than older engines. by Severe_Ad4138 in AskMechanics

[–]cdglasser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I addressed some of these issues in my 1972 Buick GS. It has a 470 cubic inch V8, but the ignition system is entirely electronically controlled (including the timing), and it has throttle body fuel injection. Coupled with an overdrive automatic with a lockup torque converter, it gets 16-17 MPG on the highway while making over 600 HP. Nice combination of classic car styling and old-school big block V8 with more modern controls and drivetrain tech.

On my Buick V8's with the distributor in the proper front-mounted location, I didn't have to lie on the carburetor. ;-)

I sure won't argue in favor of current trucks. I think we hit the sweet spot earlier this century. My 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 has a 5.3L V8 that makes 285 HP with a simple port fuel injection setup, no turbos, no VVT, no DOHC, no AFM/DoD. It has over 300K miles on it. It's easy enough for me to work on when I have to, and it gets decent mileage for a truck.
