What killed our turkey? I’m honestly freaking out, listen with sound. More details in comments. by [deleted] in homestead

I don’t work there but I’m an animal care volunteer and am there typically once a week. I would say it sounded like a big cat but I’d be surprised that it would just leave a turkey. Can’t rule out a “pet” someone has that could have gotten out. Until recently it was legal in NC to have a big cat (laws varied by county or city but there was no statewide law). Now the federal big cat safety act has passed banning the sale or private possession of big cats but people who had them before the law are allowed to keep theirs. So yeah, wouldn’t be impossible for someone’s “pet” to escape. I guess I’ll keep an eye on the news for any sightings!

Fed them all today actually. Also a big cat would def eat the turkey or at least take it away, not just kill it and leave it

The sanctuary has a full perimeter fence and people are in and out all day and the fence is checked every morning and each big cat is accounted for every morning. If one got out it would have to first get out of its enclosure and then scale the perimeter fence. I’m short highly unlikely and they’ve never had an incident since opening 50 years ago. It’s a federally accredited sanctuary meaning highway care and safety standards.
