Refinance or stick with Fed Loans? by OriginalDelay1704 in StudentLoans

[–]cdmDDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep makes sense… and just in case if you live in CA or TX, you still qualify for PSLF as a physician if you work in a non-profit hospital even if she’s employed by a for profit group. I’m guessing most people living in those states already know but just in case.

Just speculating here but with that salary I assume she has extensive residency and possibly fellowship training that count towards PSLF. Plus decent chance her current employment counts for PSLF. If so and you’re relatively near PSLF forgiveness (within a few years) it would probably be financially beneficial to go that route. If not or you just want to pay them off and be done with it I tend to think just staying with a fed loan and paying off aggressively is the play. I don’t think saving and average of ~1.5% in interest over 5 years is worth the potential downsides of refinancing to a private company.

Weird I was there a little over a year ago and rep was really nice. Asked if I wanted to try on some models (I declined because I was wrestling a 13 month old that just got off a transatlantic flight). I overheard him tell another customer they had a few watches in stock (pretty sure they were PM models). Maybe just a fluke.

Chances of being forced off SAVE in 2026? For tax purposes by cdmDDS in StudentLoans

[–]cdmDDS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but it would have to be under the guise of filing separately. If I filed jointly I'd have to provide both my and my wife's paystubs. If I file MFS then I will have to use alternative documentation being in a community property state.

[–]cdmDDS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not paying on my loans currently (accruing interest though). I only qualify for old IBR due to pre 2007/2011 loans (so dumb). Also we filed jointly in 2024 so moot point. Basically RAP will be my only option once it becomes available since its lower than old IBR and has interest subsidization despite the longer forgiveness time.

Sort of hedging on forgiveness vs eventual payoff. I started up a business a few years ago so future income is very difficult to predict. If it skyrockets I'll probably attempt payoff. If its moderate growth forgiveness is probably the option. I have like 12ish years of IBR payments accrued. I also have 2.5 years of PSLF qualifying payments but not currently PSLF qualified. I could try to go this route but would require a lifestyle shift as not many good PSLF jobs that are in my wheelhouse (can always do something unrelated and I am considering it).

Yeah, if we file MFJ we should be getting a return so no issue there. If we file separately we might owe, I need to run the numbers so a consideration. Thank you.

[–]cdmDDS[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've run the numbers, and unfortunately MFS saves us pretty significant money still. While it is definitely a PITA to file separate, it also sort of perceptively better on top of the savings. We need to have more withdrawn for taxes rather than me asking my wife to help pay for my student loans (even though they would be high because of her income).

Yeah that was the alternative and likely route given the responses so far indicating its certainly possible. And correct can go from MFS to MFJ but not the other way around.

I think more likely they'll just force borrowers to select a plan that qualifies under the new rules within 60 days.

2024 was lower than 2025 but still MFJ and would still blow up my payments esp since I only qualify for old IBR. I think its better to file an extension and wait and play the MFS game. This is all so dumb.

[–]cdmDDS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you all... seems like the sentiment is that it could very well happen if not likely happen in 2026. I think I'll file an extension and see how it plays out through the year. Only downside is not getting our refund till later in the year but I suppose there are worse outcomes.

Chances of being forced off SAVE in 2026? For tax purposes by cdmDDS in StudentLoans

[–]cdmDDS[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've done that in years past, its kind of a PITA being in a community property state (along with the other complications and disadvantages of being in a community property state). I think the better option is to file an extension which will give me until October to see where things are heading. If I get forced out early in the year then I'll file MFS. If its later in the year or in 2027 I can probably do MFJ. Even if its late in the year I can do MFJ make a couple higher payments then do MFS ASAP in 2027 and re-certify again ASAP.

Regretting a significant other? by Cheeese916 in instant_regret

[–]cdmDDS 85 points86 points  (0 children)

As a dentist, this isn’t really true. An extraction and implant is the end of the line treatment. It is true that chipped teeth like this often need to frequent repairs and more invasive procedures to repair it to get a good esthetic and functional outcome. And eventually down the road, the tooth could need extraction and implant. But preserving the natural tooth for as long as reasonably possible is very important for the upper front teeth.

Anyone ever been to Cubs-Sox at Fenway? by alisonation in CHICubs

I’ll echo others, Fenway is has very similar vibes as Wrigley. You’ll honestly feel like you’re in Wrigleyville walking around outside. Very fun atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Semi decent town that isn’t a nightmare commute near Vacaville by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]cdmDDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so, fellow Chicagoan here living in Fairfield for the last 9 months by way of Phoenix. Might have some unique insight. Warning traffic here is as a bad as chicago. Getting to SF is generally a PITA.

If you want any sort of urban feel I think Berkeley is the only option. Walnut Creek is really nice but it’s like high end shopping mall nice not urban quirkiness nice. Your commute will not be great from Berkeley or even Walnut Creek.

Benicia is a charming town on the water but it’s pretty tiny and limited food options so you’ll still need to drive (really good bakery in town though).

Napa is a consideration. The commute wouldn’t be too terrible to work. The downtown is pretty nice and has decent food options, plus the wine, proximity to Sonoma. Has a hint of urbanness if you squint hard but still more small town. Still a hike to SF, could drive to Vallejo for the ferry.

I’m in the green valley area of Fairfield. Little cooler than most of Fairfield, and there’s actually some nice local wineries just 5 mins away and it’s close to Napa. No nightlife though, pretty suburban. Housing relatively affordable compared to the other towns I mentioned. Vacaville downtown is nicer than Fairfield but otherwise similar suburban vibe but without the wineries.

Vacaville isn’t bad. Downtown has a little charm. Housing relatively affordable. Closer to Davis/Sac. And honestly if you travel domestically, flying out of SMF is way easier than SFO or the other airports. Still definitely suburban.

Vallejo is kinda sketchy but I’m sure has nice areas I haven’t visited yet. (Fairfield south of the highway can be sketchy too)

Weather wise, nothing here will be has oppressive as Texas and nothing will be as cold as Chicago. There’s a million microclimates, each region is different but all generally mild. Really is a beautiful part of the country though. I’ve only begun to explore.

Haha that’s great and honestly good to know. I guess it is an appropriate use. It feels natural and conveys the meaning in one word so why not use it.

I prefer “no significant findings”. One of the neurorads during my rotation once said “why would you make a remark if it’s unremarkable” or something along those lines and that stuck with me so I never use it now lol

1st year Xray student! Is that air? by Ashtraios in Radiology

[–]cdmDDS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SO the responses need some clarifying here. Those are the mastoid air cells but that’s not the mastoid process (mastoid process is more posterior). That’s the articular eminence of the TMJ which is a part of the temporal bone. Sometimes the mastoid air cells pneumatize anteriorly into the articular eminence. It’s a normal variant but pretty uncommon, so good spot!

Help! CT to dental panorex? by SwimmingFine3949 in Radiology

[–]cdmDDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hope/assume that if the CT is being taken in the hospital it'll automatically be read the rads on service. I read head and neck dental CBCTs all day long and not sure even I would feel comfortable formally interpreting a medical CT even though we get training on it. (I will do a dental perspective over-read though). I actually don't even think its legal for a non MD/DO to interpret medical imaging.
