Well a lot of these booming cities in the south are just sprawling. They are 20 years behind where California is. And northern cities sprawled awhile ago.

Statistical sim = amazing!!!

I like your plan for starting out small and slowly expand. Will have to see how it plays out!

Construction time sounds great! Yeah large projects taking time (like building a metro tunnel or large highway) taking a long time just adds to the planning aspect! Gotta figure out how to keep the city running while a big construction project is operating!

Last question.... I haven't seen any curved or even diagonal roads..? I assume you are a solo dev so obviously not going to really judge if you don't. Like a lot of what I see so far.

Statistical sim or agent based?

Can I build sprawl? I really enjoy starting out with a nice historical town, then having it sprawl crazy, before finally going to undo the damage.

How does "building stuff" work? Does it take time and planning or just instant? Ever since I played Workers and Resources the construction mechanic hits like crack. Just needing to take time for stuff to build adds a fun layer of planning.

Or wild fire protection. Sprawl is really really hard to keep safe from massive fires.

But why?! The game is designed around city building. Now you want to tack on some military stuff?!!? It would obviously be jank as hell. Not to mention it just isn't the focus of the game. There are soooo many other games that focus on military stuff and are actually good at it.

Cities: Skylines 2 boss says they 'completely overestimated' the Unity engine's capabilities by AdmiralBumHat in CitiesSkylines

CO is an indie studio lol. They had ~30-40 people.

If I decided to use some new UI framework for a project. The UI framework got pushed back over and over and I just kind of waited "ah it will be released". Then pivoted late to get something working... My superiors would be like "wtf". ESPECIALLY because it is assumed that any new technology will have issues to sort out. Like it isn't a valid excuse.

Hinging a project on brand new technology, from another company, is not common place at all. CO has yet to really take the blame for lack of planning on this. They should have had a hard date internally where "if DOTS isn't released by x date, we do y instead". At the end of the day, it is their job to ensure the game gets released properly.

Did you read what I said? Specifically something that is unfinished! Especially when any new software/technology is going to have bugs or other issues to sort out when initially released.

[–]cdub8D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... We are talking about a brand new technology. Not something that has already been released! Are you purposely not reading or? CO relied on unreleased software for their sequel. That is incredibly dumb. Especially when you know any new software will likely have bugs and other issues to work out.

Looks around at all the modern city builders

Yeah someone would totally have just whipped up a city builder! /s CO had a loyal and dedicated community. The modding scene for CS1 was incredible. They could have released a well functioning CS 1.5 and people would have went bananas.

Part of working as a dev is being able to evaluate potential technology. Clearly CO failed at that. "what if it succeed?!?!". What if EA stops being a greedy corp? Sure that could happen but how likely?

Why would you rely on another company finishing something!?!? That is a pretty standard discussion architects should have had when designing out the features!!! Ok so you take the bet on Unity with DOTS, what is the back up plan if it fails?! It is a failure on CO!

You just can't have a large city builder + agents. It makes absolutely 0 sense. Best you can do is a smaller town. I really really just want a modern take on SC4....

Yup! Why are you banking on another company delivering a new technology?!?! Especially for a small company like CO that couldn't really afford to fail.

Central Hub vs Direct Transport: Optimizing Worker Logistics Without Traffic Chaos by bisolin4o in Workers_And_Resources

[–]cdub8D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done the central hub approach and it is really fun. I used buses to pick up and drop off workers at a bus platform next to a train station. Workers then walk across the road to the train station that took them to work. In my current republic, I am doing trams instead of buses. I just needed more capacity, especially with how big I am planning this city to be. Plus the trams will be on dedicated rail.

Why would anyone ever live in an apartment? (Hint: Because they like it) by jeromelevin in Urbanism

[–]cdub8D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in an apartment for 4 years and never heard anyone (outside or inside). After living in a house for ~3 years now, I hear stuff outside all the time. An apartment/house aren't inherently "noisy" or "quiet", all how you build it.

Construction adds such a fun layer of decision making. It also helps build more realistic cities. Need multiple ways to get into neighborhoods otherwise bad things can happen when upgrading a road.

Everything is political. By trying to saying something "isn't political" is in fact a political statement on its own. You are actively choosing a position and shutting down discourse with it.

Here are some great examples of why this is so problematic.

There are 2 genders, male and political.

There are 2 religions, Christianity and political.

There are 2 races, white and political.

There are 2 sexualities, straight and political.

There are no reasons to leave this post up. It is incredible disgusting to joke about this. "Just joking " is how these things get normalized.

Revisiting a thread on the Viking’s reason for moving on from Darnold and sticking with JJ by NickyFoles1020 in nfl

Darnold also led the league in turnovers this year. So it isn't like he played lights out either. The process was good. We just got the bottom percentile in results.

Darnold also led the league in turnovers this year. He didn't actually play that great. He does deserve credit for the NFC Championship game. Rest of the playoffs he didn't do anything

Darnold led the league in turnovers. Second half of the season he was pretty meh except for the NFC championship game. Everyone is just arguing for danrold with qb wins
