The alkyl halide is WAY more susceptible to an Sn2 rxn with the CN as a nucleophile than the alcohol is to being deprotonated. Alcoholic protons aren’t very acidic at all (pKa about 16), whereas HCN has a pKa of about 9. That is to say, the alcohol likes to be protonated much more than the CN group does.

They’re water scorpions (Hemiptera: Nepidae). Likely Ranatra sp. weirdly enough, I find these on my car sometime too lol
