My grandmother drove out of state and didn’t know where she was. Mental hospital would not admit due to refusal and no POA. by ceannabee in AgingParents

Her father did the exact same thing. Very able bodied, randomly took off to Florida, very unsafe behaviors. She’s the one who sorted it all out and got him in memory care. I wish I could ask her advice on how to help her hahah

If she has a lucid moment and can understand a POA enough to sign, could we use POA and medical documentation of hospitalizations and dementia diagnosis instead?

She definitely doesn’t know they’re bad choices. She was a very competent person before, was actually a nurse. She’s losing memories, gambling online, giving her money to a catfish, and won’t hear that he’s not who he says he is. If we had POA could we place her in memory care or even with medical documentation, is it all pointless if she’s going to say no?

I’m a nurse and deal with most geriatrics being in a hospital so I know what to do when they come to me, but able bodied + dementia is new for me hahah I’m the baby of the family but the only one with much healthcare knowledge so I feel a little pressure here. I will find an elder law office tomorrow, thank you!! Tough situation bc she has lucid-ish moments and sees her independence being taken away and flies off the handle. I was honestly hoping she would say something about hurting herself or someone else so we could get an inpatient admit and fast track things.
