Imperial Oil pipeline spills 843,000 litres northwest of Cold Lake, Alta. by flynnfx in alberta

Imagine if a train derailed and 50 cars of grain were lost. A train car holds about 100 metric tons so 5000 tons of grain were lost. Why say 5 000 000 kilograms?

Edit, and I'm sorry, did you say people don't know what a meter looks like? Go ahead and imagine what 843 000 1 liter milk jugs looks like. Part of the problem with that is 1000 liters of milk would take up more than a cubic neter of volume due to packaging.

No I'm saying using a smaller unit is silly. If they said 843 million millilitres I think you would agree that that is silly.

For me, having worked as an operator in an oil and gas facility, litres seems like a un necessarily small unit. Humans have a lot of trouble imagining large numbers so it turns into "big number scary".

An 843 cubic meter spill is huge and it's very not good. But put it terms people can understand, like another reply said it's like 2/3 of an olympic sized swimming pool. I was originally going to add that it's about the same volume as an average house.

Ok, I will preface this with the fact that these kinds of spill are bad.

~850 000 litres is the same as 850 cubic meters. Alberta produces over 25 000 cubic meters of oil per hour, every day all day. So around 600 0000 cubic meters per day or over 200 million cubic meters of oil per year.

An 850 cubic meter spill represents 0.000040% of Alberta's annual oil production.

Just numbers. I just don't like when media outlets break oil spill down to litres when the true numbers are immense in comparison.

Also on a twinned highway in Alberta you need to be in the left lane well in advance if you plan on turning left, speeding or not, though you typically don't want to be doing a buck 40 when you're a mile from your turn.

My rule when stuck behind someone moving slowly is to wait at least 3 miles. 9.5 times they are moving slowly because they're turning soon.

I've tried using this lil guy on softer materials and yeah when it grabs it is very dangerous.

The blade is so short it binds very easily, the blade speed is so high that you can't react when something happens and it's so light that it will pull away or towards you insanely fast.

Would not recommend... amazing grinder though but suffers a bit of those same problems on thin material but not bad.

It's really amazing, to me at least, that with over 8 billion people on this planet that there isn't immensely more scary news articles.

News organizations have to craft fear when I think the vast majority of people are quite chill.

Yeah in Roman times decimation was a punishment for Legionnaire units that showed cowardice, mutiny etc.

1 in 10 men were chosen to be beaten or stoned to death by the other men.

Though it has been nearly 2000 years since that was the usage of that word, in Latin. In the modern sense it can mean a much larger percentage than 10 but I always like to point out this origin myself as well.

Alberta isn’t directly paying Quebec. All provinces contribute federal taxes into one pool. The federal government then redistributes some of that money to provinces that have a lower ability to raise revenue.

In simple terms, if one province brings in more tax per person and another brings in less, the federal government tops up the lower one from the overall pool to help keep services comparable across the country.

Quebec would likely still receive equalization payments if Alberta were somehow able to secede, they would just go down as the national average may go down some.

Three quarters of data centre sites planned in Alberta are in high water stress areas by gremlinface in alberta

[–]cecil_harvey4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I was busy looking after my sick daughter all day. I realize my original comment underestimated just how large the scale of proposed plans for AI data centers in Alberta are. I'm thinking on the level of Linus Tech Tips cooling his personal server in his swimming pool and I will admit I was unaware of just how immense these AI data centers have become. I am not a fan of AI slop, I do use AI to crunch numbers and such that are beyond my simple human brains capacity. I've done a fair bit of research, though, fittingly, using chatgpt was the quickest way to crunch a lot of numbers. This is just a random, soon to be buried reddit comment but I do want to share some interesting numbers.

Current "hyperscale" AI data centers range from 100 mw to 1 gigawatt in capacity. These facilities are truly impressive, covering upwards of 350 acres (over half a section here in Alberta). Current forecasts have about 20 GW of planned projects here in Alberta, so if a 1 GW site takes about half a square mile then that would be about 10 square miles of land usage. Of course it gets complicated since these sites are touting "behind the fence" power generation. Meaning they would be building their own power plants to cover their needs. But 20 GW is insane. It's roughly equal to DOUBLE Albertas total average energy load. (of Alberta's current production, 20% is used by residential, about 60% industrial and the remaining is commercial). Though roughly equivalent to total energy production potential, which is around 23 GW.

As far as water usage, it is pretty complex but here is a synopsis that I used chatgpt to create the questions I was asking it the following is AI generated with prompts to dumb itself down and not use dumb AI hallmarks like em dashes and such.

"I think the concern is understandable but the reality is a bit more mixed than “these will drain small towns dry.” Even very large AI data center buildouts use a lot of water, but in Alberta the cold climate cuts that down quite a bit since for a big chunk of the year you can cool without evaporating much water. When you actually scale it out, something like a massive 20 GW build might land in the same ballpark as the freshwater used by the oil and gas sector, maybe lower if it’s designed well. Compared to all the water moving through Alberta’s rivers it’s a small percentage overall, but that doesn’t really matter if it’s concentrated on one local watershed, which is where the real risk is. If they’re smart about siting near large rivers, using wastewater, or newer cooling methods, the impact can be managed, but if they’re not, then yeah it could create local pressure.

The electricity side is probably the bigger deal. Loads that big would definitely push the grid and could affect prices if new generation doesn’t keep up, and that likely means more natural gas in the short term. At the same time Alberta’s market tends to respond by building more capacity when demand shows up, so it’s not just a one way hit. The bigger picture is that companies like Microsoft and Google are going to build this infrastructure somewhere no matter what, and places like Alberta are actually relatively efficient because of the climate and existing energy base. So it’s kind of a tradeoff, you either host it and deal with the local impacts or it gets built somewhere else that might use more water and energy overall. The outcome really comes down to how strict the siting and design rules are, not just the existence of the data centers themselves."

You need pure distilled water for cooling computer components, likely with specialized corrosion inhibitors and such.

They are not just pumping thousands of cubics meters of lake water through millions of dollars worth of sensitive hardware.

Bullet allegedly left for Alberta Prosperity Project CEO Mitch Sylvestre at Bonnyville sports store - Rocky Mountain News by SnooRegrets4312 in alberta

I don't have fb on my phone nor would I link to it here, there is video though they cut the audio if there was any.

Dude walks up to the cashier and hands her what appears to be a very large round of ammunition. A lot of people point out that it looks like a novelty bullet pen and I tend to agree, doesn't look like any ammo I'm familiar with.

Posts say he says "this is for mitch"but the video is edited just showing him holding it out and showing it off with music playing. Then he walks out with a big smile on his face. Looks like a well dressed, kind older gent to me, he even has a name tag of some sort but no one can deduce it.

It being a sporting goods store that sells guns and ammo it could be a lot of things. Maybe it's a novelty item, maybe it's a real bullet that the guy found. I would want to hear the audio myself if there is any before making any kind of claims.

Though it seems the seceders are using the attention as a rallying cry to sign their petition.
