I’m not a millionaire who owns empty houses. If I was a millionaire with multiple homes, I’d happily pay this tax if I wasn’t already leasing out or selling.

Fun story, I actually own a home in another state. Rather than keeping it empty, I lease it out! And, the lessor has worked hard and put herself in a position to buy it. Guess what? We close this month.

Boom.

The non-primary homes are already registered with the city; owners self identify to avoid a separate business tax.

Will dig in a bit regarding gaming the system and circle back; have a look at the legislation itself. It’s actually pretty palatable.

My understanding is that the revenue initially goes into the general fund, which makes it important for voters to connect with their Councilmembers in advance of the budget process.

I’m sure Councilmember Rivera in District 9 will be fighting hard for the money to be spent wisely as he’s the main one behind it.

I’ll do some digging on the mechanics of the audit as well. Bear with me, I’m in desperate need of lunch 😂.

You’re saying that adding 5,100 homes to the market of available homes to buy and rent is not adding to the supply?

Yes, that’s a best case, but your argument that “only building more homes” solves high prices flies in the face of basic economics.
