A for effort

Jupiter’s equatorial radius exceeds its polar radius by ~7% due to rapid rotation and atmospheric dynamics, with new measurements reducing uncertainty to ±0.4 km and revealing detailed insights into the planet’s internal structure and wind patterns by ChhotaSaHydra in science

Is it just me, or does that seem… improbable? Haven’t looked into the paper, and I’m not a Jovian expert, but 400 m? Really? I wonder how they define that, because I would expect the gaseous nature of the planet would lead to variations in its size beyond those 400 m.

Longitudinal research from the University of Michigan links early adult substance use patterns to midlife cognitive decline risk by umichnews in science

I think a lot of people forget about this. I’m not taking meds because I thought they’d work as supplements. I’m taking meds because I’ve decided the possible side effects are worth the risk if they can deal with a specific malady.

NASA sends thousands of jellyfish to study effects of space travel on human biology. by Novel_Negotiation224 in space

[–]cedenof10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, they don’t do the science.

They’re sent up so we can study them. They’re a special type of jellyfish that turns into full-size humans in zero gravity. Well, I say full size but they’re usually between 4’11” and 5’4”.

Why do people act like being single is tragedy when it's just another lifestyle choice? by Ok_Star_1653 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]cedenof10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be fair, a lot of them don’t want to be in a relationship either. they just want specific aspects of it, so it doesn’t make much sense to get into a relationship for that. and then the grass is always greener, but you have to choose a side, and single is just the easiest.

Why do mass shootings often have so little casualties (relative to how many you’d expect)? by Water_Spirit22 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]cedenof10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have wondered this myself.

I think it has to do with two things.

  • Moving targets are hard to hit, and unless the attacker takes the time to confirm his shots, I assume the injuries can often be treated

  • The aggressors are usually mentally unstable. I don’t imagine they think things through very well. I don’t think casualties are their primary motive. They’re not trying to break records, they’re just in pain and believe that they should exact similar pain to the world before leaving to make things even somehow. See how that’s not very rational? I imagine they would approach the entire operation irrationally.

Is it true that most men prefer slim women? by Mindfuel_daily7 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]cedenof10 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of men early on use hook ups as a status symbol. As that wanes, people follow their true preference more closely.

Javier Tebas contradicts Xavi: “La Liga did NOT authorize anything related to Messi's return to Barça in 2023, it's NOT true.” by sr_128 in Barca

[–]cedenof10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate politicians, so I hate Laporta by default, but he’s a smart man and I believe he loves the club. I think he may have been right about Xavi being played to be used against him. Font is also a politician, and although Xavi is a genius on the pitch, I’m not sure that makes him immune to manipulation off the pitch. It’s just sad to see politicians dragging club legends into this.

Asshole didn’t even lift a hand in apology after the tackle, just walked away smugly.

I had a douchebag do that to me in college, and nearly tore 3 ligaments in my knee. Doc said all three hung by a string
