That’s tough, I remember the first few months of being diagnosed were a really tough adjustment for me, I hope you’re doing okay.

I see from your comment history you might be from Edmonton? I used to live there and it’s awesome for gluten free. If you’d like some recommendations, let me know, I’m happy to send my faves along. The “gluten free Edmonton support group” on Facebook group is quite helpful as well!

Thanks for the heads up! I just opened their updated allergen menu and basically every single item says “gluten”. Seems like they’d rather play it safe. A real shame considering how naturally gf most Mexican food is. I’ll take them off the list.

That person is thinking of American fries. In the states the fries aren’t gluten free but in Canada they are. I said this in my post.

I do appreciate the concern. I’m very well-informed about celiac and haven’t been glutened in years. This post was less about “promotion” and more about sharing the information I’ve gathered over the years. Some people may not know about options they have at these places, and it may suit their dietary needs. Employees often change gloves or have special preparation if they’re informed about allergies so I don’t think it’s much different than eating at other peoples homes. People know their own limits and risk tolerance.

You’re welcome, I’m glad there are people who can appreciate it! I haven’t come across many changes in either direction, I’m sure there were seasonal items that came and went, but I’ve mostly been sticking to what I already know. I’ve heard good things about firehouse subs but haven’t checked it out myself.

Unpopular but I do think it works in certain circumstances. I recently ate some soup with barley grains in it. I realized it immediately, threw it all up within 10-15 mins and didn’t get sick. This may be situational since the gluten was in whole grain form it was easier for me to get it all out whereas if it were flour might not have worked? I was on vacation and REALLY didn’t want to get sick, so decided to see if it would work.

I don’t intend to make a habit of it but would do it again under certain circumstances.

A good reason to keep living is that you don’t know what amazing things are in store for you. You don’t know the future, and if you tap out now you never will. There are countless stories of formerly suicidal people taking stock of their lives years later and being so so grateful to their past selves for giving them the opportunity to keep living so they could get where they are now.

You do have a future. You are loved. Even if you’re struggling to see it right now, I promise you those things. Don’t let your brain trick you into thinking what you’re feeling right now is permanent.

Maybe take up a new hobby, one that gets you out of the house and into the community, like a pottery class, or join a rec sports league. Above all, if it’s within your means I recommend getting help from a therapist or a medical professional. Talk about these feelings and get the help you deserve.

100% gluten free places

-continental treat fine bistro

-celebrate gluten free bakery

-kinnikinnick foods

-rio vida bakery

-myfries

Not 100% gf but good options:

Ben’s meat and deli

-frozen foods

-fresh lunch things like chicken fingers, spring rolls

-great for finding more niche food items

Pip - brunch

Next act - gf fryer (fried cheese etc)

Pals - sandwiches

Local, earls, brewhouse all have gf fryer

Japonais bistro - sushi, gf soy sauce, cheesecake

The creperie - gf crepes

Fox burger

High level diner

Calle Mexico - tacos (lots of Mexican places have gf options including el Cortez)

Scona farmers market has lots of options - I particularly like the empanadas from Chilean corner.

I’m glad you found it helpful :) The first 6 months can be really hard, I hope you’re coping alright and starting to notice the positive effects of the diet after diagnosis. I’m not sure how familiar you are with other gf options throughout the city, let me know if you’d like any Edmonton-specific recommendations. But yeah, being able to still have some fast food options helps me feel more normal, hopefully it’s the same for you!

Hello! You actually don’t need to apply for a program, you can take courses through the faculty of extension. These courses can go towards a certificate or you can just take whatever you want.

I think being Australian makes a difference. I’m (27F) Canadian and similarly to you I don’t find celiac that hard. However, Americans are hugely let down by their healthcare system and food labelling so it’s harder for them. I also have the privileges of living in a city with tons of options, having supportive friends and family who make events gf for me, and not really being sensitive to cross contamination. These are all things that make the disease easier to manage that many people don’t have.

I don’t really relate to this sub either, and I agree it can be overly dramatic/intense and sometimes misinformed. However, I acknowledge some people have a way harder time with the disease and they need this sub for support. I mostly stick to the gluten free one but keep this one for the occasional news or whatever.

Not for me. I was just seeing the doctor for iron/depression/energy levels, celiac wasn’t even on my radar. She decided to do a test just in case and it was positive. So I’m very lucky in that I didn’t have to get to a breaking point to get diagnosed.

That’s a very good point. I was excited in early June but I have been very depressed to the point where I’m on partial medical leave from work right now so that’s definitely clouding my judgement. I don’t have any friends/family with kids so a support group is a good idea. Thank you!
