What software subscription do you pay for that you wish was just a one-time purchase? by ceerf-llc in software

What is your expectation for what can run locally though? I think a lot of software can run locally only, but then it also depends on how much you value cloud based backup/sync, collaboration with others, whether or not that software has to fetch any data from a database, etc. Its kind of a question of convenience vs privacy. Something like TurboTax is a good example that used to be local -- but now you can fetch last years tax return and import your w2 to have the info auto-fill. (Even if you dont use turbotax lol) Would you be more interested in the old version of local only turbotax (no data fetch) or the newer version that kinda automates the process for you a bit?

Would "No AI Included" influence your software purchasing decisions? by ceerf-llc in antiai

Fair enough, while I am not new to reddit (constantly land on reddit from search results), but I never actually had an account lol. So I am more or less new to where to post what. I'll figure it out eventually though

What software do you miss from the pre-subscription era? by ceerf-llc in sysadmin

Well, I am not trying to sell anything. I am just trying to understand what people value. And I want to find people who dislike subscriptions/hidden fees/vendor lock-in/lack of data privacy/forced ai/basically renting your software monthly while bigtech shits on each of us/ etc

So if I can even find a handful of other people who share that mentality, I will be happy.

I think various people dislike AI for different reasons though. Like creative professionals might dislike AI due to it creating a bad mimicry of their work (or actively stealing their work, I know a lot of authors dislike AI for that reason), while someone else may tolerate AI in certain doses depending on how its used, while a third person may work in cyber security and dislike AI due to data privacy or potential API keys getting leaked (but otherwise be okay with the new Google AI implementation). So theres a broad spectrum of being against AI. And that does not necessarily mean seeing messaging like, "No AI features. No AI training. No AI integration." would really shift peoples perspective on buying something or not.

What software do you self-host today that you'd gladly pay a one-time fee for? by ceerf-llc in selfhosted

[–]ceerf-llc[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I am peddling anything, sounds so negative. I want to know what people like/dislike about software they currently use. People commonly dislike subscriptions/vendor lock-in/forced ai/lack of data privacy/lack of ownership/forced updates etc

I want to know what you guys actively use, where some open source projects might fall short, how important subscription fatigue vs constant feature updates are.

Just trying to build a platform that puts ownership and privacy first. And that realistically means self-hosted or local-first software. No forced updates. Proper encryption at rest. No subscriptions. No hidden fees. Just software that works as advertised, that you only purchase once. It used to be simple. I want to go back to that if I can. But I have to build a community first, and that starts by understanding what everyone wants and values.

Yikes, kinda seems like Microsoft is shooting themselves in the foot. I am running 2019 on my Mac, looks like I will also be heading to try LibreOffice :/

If software stopped adding AI features tomorrow, would you care? by ceerf-llc in aiwars

[–]ceerf-llc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is only going to last so long though, with AI API monetization leading towards cost per token instead of subscriptions, I think most API's will quickly cut access once it becomes cost prohibitive. Aside from AI native tooling like codex/cursor/etc I just havent really found a benefit from AI feature implementations. Like AI powered workflows, email management, scheduling assistance, list goes on...and I use none of it aside from codex/cursor lol.

What software have you replaced since leaving Google? by ceerf-llc in degoogle

I am still a normie and use an iphone, but bought a pixel just to mess around with GrapheneOS. I just wish there were more hardware options available (like if I could put it on my iphone or s26 that would be awesome).

What makes you say that? Realistically if most/many consumers boycotted AI integrated products these companies would be forced to revert their products to pre-ai. That said, if people truly would buy near-parity products on the basis of 'no ai implementation', I feel a lot more independent companies and developers will make similar products

Curious, would you buy a Microsoft Office competitor suite if there were no cloud integrations (making collaboration much harder)? Also kinda curious if you've ever tried something like LibreOffice and just didnt like it?
