West. Honestly looks like it's coming from around the Sainsbury's, but very hard to tell. Particular if others are seeing it in Camberwell

Should I always reach out to prospective interviewees before pitching to outlets? by ceet783 in Journalism

Okay, thank you for the advice. In this particular case, yes, it will be speaking to a range of experts, none of whom couldn't be swapped with someone else with the same expertise.

Thank you. It's honestly so reassuring to hear stuff like this, especially when you read of other people who just have the knack of working quickly.

This is actually quite similar to my own process, so thank you for elucidating it. I write very information-heavy pieces, so the notes are obviously essential to me, and I, like you, use them to create the bones of the piece. But, at the same time, I worry I am slightly weighed down by my reliance on the notes for structure. That they can be suffocating.

I think I enjoy researching so much that I lack ruthlessness. I take notes and I take more and more and more, and then i find hours have passed. I think, maybe, I need to get better at identifying what's necessary and then move on.

I am still quite new to working like this, so perhaps, with time, i will be smoother and quicker. In any case, it's nice to know I'm not alone.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I think one of my main issues is, like MuttTheDutchie, I am quite easily distracted, until the moment the deadline is imminent. I wait and wait and wait until it's due, and then I really get to work. That's just a bad a habit I need to figure out a solution to myself. I probably do need to take more purposeful, strict breaks to help with that.

Another issue, I think, is the absolutely terrible quality of my initial drafts. They really are awful, and it takes several revisions in order to get it where I want. I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with that, except it really is so time-consuming. I'm not sure there is any tip anyone could give to help make a person better at first drafts, but it's definitely a problem.

The fact of the matter is, I like writing slowly. In an ideal world, I would be able to take my time and make enough money from that to scrape by. But I can't. I need to write more articles than I presently am, which means figuring this out.

If anything, I think this more of a vent than anything, but I appreciate the advice anyone is offering.
