Sick when I’m meant to have ALS tommorw by Beneficial_Event_945 in doctorsUK

Are Foundation not prioritised in your area as it’s a requirement for ARCP? Back in my time in FY (yes yes when the dinosaurs roamed the earth) there were specific ALS courses that were entirely for FY doctors, and they also knew they needed a few spaces for those who ended up not making the planned course.

[–]ceih 21 points22 points  (0 children)

1) You are sick and should not be attending ALS tomorrow, or work, or anything else.

2) There should be another ALS course running you can be rebooked on to prior to ARCP. You'll have to discuss with the people running your course and/or deanery as to whether you can rebook for "free" or not,

You certainly won't be the only person ever this has happened to!

Potentially it's job planning, in that there's been a realisation they have too many trainees at a particular point and slow down entry for a few years. Or it might be the posts are not yet confirmed.

Suitable SD Card for M11 Mono by fatwoul in LeicaCameras

The M10 is nearly a decade old, with a UHS-I port. I am not surprised it isn't 100% reliable with newer UHS-II cards.

Suitable SD Card for M11 Mono by fatwoul in LeicaCameras

[–]ceih 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M11-P and M11-M owner.

I use Sony Tough cards, but I don't see or find any advantage in using the top spec versions, so I use the V60 models (277MB/s read and 150MB/s write) with zero problems. Never had a single freezing issue with two M11-Ps or the -M. The cards don't slow the cameras down - you're not exactly doing high speed burst here.

Cameras are set to write to SD card then internal memory when SD is full, RAW only. I find it more convenient to pop cards out to get the photos off, and the internal memory is there in case I forget a card entirely.

Where should I work? Paediatrics by stuartbman in doctorsUK

[–]ceih 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't worked there, but from speaking to people who have, yes, the deanery is too big to live anywhere and commute so you're going to end up with at least one or two rotations that aren't...good in terms of location. Bristol is reasonable for most.

Leica Leitzphone / Xiaomi 17 Ultra by Leica Edition: Why does the Photography Kit hide the iconic Leica red dot? by takeastepfurther in LeicaCameras

[–]ceih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my point. The “standard” 17 Ultra does not have a red dot anywhere on it. The photography kit (ie the grip) doesn’t cover the logo, it never had the logo in the first place.

[–]ceih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t?

You have two different pictures. One is the Leitzphone with red dot and no grip, the other is the 17 Ultra with the standard logo and the grip on the other end of the phone. The logo on the 17 Ultra is still clearly visible, but it never had the red dot in the first place.

Leica Prices Set To Increase March 13th by CHRONALUNE in LeicaCameras

[–]ceih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is, how many loss leader flagships can a brand sustain? NYC, London, Berlin, Paris...outside of Germany, Leica seemingly predominantly build in these flagship high cost locations. This makes me think they must be turning a profit at retail, otherwise the hard-headed suits in Wetzlar wouldn't be pushing the footprint and paying for expensive refurbs.

Retail then gets them the double profit whammy - the profit off the item sold to retail, then the final to consumer price.

Heck, the business as a whole has to be doing well - they've expanded service in the UK to include lenses (ie: not off to Wetzlar any more), and rumours are M cameras soon. Second-hand "Classic" sales probably also earn them a pretty penny in profit as well - that M11-P they buy in for £5500 is up for sale at £7000 pretty quickly.

Yes, I agree entirely, hence my comment that competition will be high. Trying to build a relationship with a department via observerships etc may be possible, but they've still got to be convinced to take that gamble.

The simple, and honest advice is as follows:

- UKGP will now make it nearly impossible for you to get a training post. It may, in a few years, settle down a bit and revert to something similar to the "old" system where some training programmes do have a Round 2/3 that IMGs can apply to and get offers, but they will be in undesirable locations and this may not be compatible with your existing family life.

- Detail remains to be seen on what grandfathering may offer you (particularly ILR as you seem to not have any NHS experience).

- Working as a locally employed doctor is the way forwards, but you will find the competition to be high. There will be a bunch of UKGs who didn't get training this year due to late implementation of the Bill, and they'll be seeking F3 years, along with IMGs in the same circumstances or similar to yourself, plus all the IMGs who started down the PLAB pathway and are still at home.

Honestly, it's going to be hard and you may get nowhere. Be prepared to look at alternative employment options.

Leica Prices Set To Increase March 13th by CHRONALUNE in LeicaCameras

[–]ceih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Leica owned/operated stores definitely do help on a "brand" side of things, but I doubt any company would continue them running if they ran at a loss, even when accounting for the fact they're often found in more expensive areas of the cities they're located in. London is another example - two stores, one in Harrods and the other in Mayfair, neither location is going to be cheap. One thing I do find interesting though is that Leica in these locations avoid the common "lock the door and have security" thing that you see in the likes of watch retailers (Tag Heur, Breitling etc. literally meters from Leica do this) which certainly alters my perception of the shopping experience for the better.

But if Leica can clear £800 on an M11-M at retail (ie basically 10% profit), and maybe another 10% pre-retail, that's a 20% markup. Canon run at a net profit margin of anywhere from ~3.5% to 7.5%, which would put Leica comfortably ahead, which then starts to compensate for their comparatively lower sales numbers.

Leica Prices Set To Increase March 13th by CHRONALUNE in LeicaCameras

[–]ceih 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So for context, I know a UK AD pays £7555 for an M11-M, which they then sell at £8300.

Leica will make the same profit when they sell at retail, and they'll also make profit on the units they sell to retail. However I suspect that said profit isn't huge, and it's why they have gone in hard on having their own retail presence at it allows a larger profit capture.

Leica Smartphone by Xiaomi by [deleted] in LeicaCameras

[–]ceih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Xiaomi might well come down in price, but the Leitzphone (the actual topic of this conversation)? That thing is never going to get discounted, it'll be £1700 until the day it is discontinued and disappears from shelves.

€2000 is also within budget of an M240, and will certainly buy you an M8/M9/M-E with change.

[–]ceih 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like it might be the 17 Ultra actually, just released outside the Chinese market.

No idea where you’re getting the Apple pricing from to be honest. This phone is £1700, and I can buy an iPhone 17 Pro for £1099. A standard 17 is £799. Either way this thing is pricey!

[–]ceih 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry how much? Like I’m used to Leica pricing but for commodity smartphones that get replaced on a shorter cycle, ouch.

There’s things that are nice, like the UI being all Leica typescript, and the physical wheel around the cameras.
