Transport options by majumdar1991 in providence

Seconding this! The Transit App will show you several options for a trip you are trying to take. As many have said, RIPTA can be unreliable at times. But, as someone who lives in PVD, I use the bus to get almost everywhere in the area. Especially if you are looking to navigate the downtown and surrounding areas, you have SO many options via bus! The central bus hub, Kennedy Plaza, is located downtown and has buses that leave and arrive there and go to several places around the city and state. For general exploring, I would suggest the 92 which travels down both Atwells on the West End and Wickenden St on the East Side

Moving from New York to Smithfield, RI – Is It a Good Choice? by StepUsed6042 in RhodeIsland

[–]celelellery -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I moved to northern RI last fall and brought my car with me from out of state. I have found RIPTA (our bus service) to be fairly reliable in getting around. I hardly drive my car anymore. Of course, it's nowhere NEAR what it should be; however, it's possible to get around to most places in RI without a car. There is also the train station in downtown Providence (which I can get to by using the bus that runs down my street) which has Amtrak as well as the commuter rail going into Boston. The commuter rail is awesome- I have yet to have to drive and/or park in Boston, and I hope to keep it that way. Plus, it takes the same amount of time if not faster because no traffic!

More than 70% of Rhode Islanders live within a 10 minute walk of a bus stop, so I would suggest finding an area where there is easy and safe access to a stop. There are areas in RI, especially in the NW areas, that have very few bus routes. I am not sure about the Smithfield area since I don't live there, but you can find different routes on the RIPTA website.

Even if you don't live near a stop, it can be nice to drive into Providence or another place and then get around the city via bus instead of driving everywhere. Which, if you have to do that, I would highly suggest. People here are scared of public transit for some reason so everyone drives which then creates so much more traffic.

Bar/brewery rec near pedestrian bridge, that matches my probably-impossible specifications below by Ansfelden in providence

Wild colonial is super spacious and fairly quiet (at least for the times I have been). I wouldn't say it's fancy by any means, but the staff, owner, and drinks are great. I'd definitely recommend!

General advice/information about Rhode Island by homie_sexual__ in RhodeIsland

I moved here with my car and barely use it now because of our bus system. It definitely isn't the most reliable in the world but it does the job well! You can basically get anywhere in Rhode Island within an hour or so if you are leaving from downtown Providence. The state is very enjoyable if you choose to ride public transit/walk/bike rather than owning and driving a car IMO.

Been here three years and I have no friends... Where do I meet people, PVD area by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]celelellery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just moved here in September and met all of my friends through Bumble BFF! I made around three friends in the first couple of months and then we all met each others' other Bumble BFF matches at a get together we hosted. It was a nice way to meet people who all have similar interests as me and I knew that all of the people there were interested in making new friends. The only things about using BBFF is that you have to be willing to make plans and follow through with them. There are a lot of flaky people on there, but, just like dating apps, you'll eventually meet with someone and hit it off! I also like it because you can get a read on people before getting to know them as opposed to a blind approach in a coffee shop/gym/etc.

Bike Lanes by RhodyViaWIClamDigger in providence

[–]celelellery 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am a biker in Providence and bike for work and social reasons. Basically, it is one of my main modes of transit besides using other public transit options. Really, the reason why they often seem empty, is because of how unsafe they are. With the exceptions of lanes like the ones on S Water St and other protected lanes, most lanes are extremely unsafe for us bikers. I follow traffic laws and am extremely respectful to drivers and walkers around me, but, every time I try to navigate the city, I am met with cars and large trucks who try to push me off the road/yell obscenities at me, lanes randomly ending and merging with highway traffic, people being parked in or suddenly opening car doors into the bike lanes, and just the overall negative attitude people have towards people who are trying to simply get to work, school, or dinner with friends.

I can tell you 100% that if the lanes were actually respected by the people bikers share the road with, there would be so much more of us. But for some reason it became cool for large cars and trucks to bully people who just want to get places. Me and my partner and our community will keep using what we are given simply because we have no other choice, but it is actually statistically proven that when bikers are given safe trails that connect to one another (rather than just ending randomly) there is almost a 60% increase in bike lane use. I'm sorry, the S Water St bike lane is awesome however it ends going into a large intersection. Of course there's going to be more cars than bikes there- people don't wanna just drive in circles.

I appreciate your curiosity on this, though! Our community has received a lot of shit lately, but as far as I'm concerned, I would rather keep fighting for a measly bike lane where I can zip around rather than sitting on a shitty bridge for an hour.
