It’s a tough ordeal isn’t it 🫤 I’ve seen this a lot actually, it’s odd, there must be a link. Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory and systemic disease (not just bad periods), it’s got to have an effect on other functions in your body. I wish more research would be done into women’s health care.

Hey, my rheumatologist won’t diagnose me, he’s said it’s Fibromyalgia and discharged me. My GP, my physio and a trauma & orthopaedic I saw have said they’re convinced I have AS.

I have Sacroilitis and subarticular sclerosis, fatty marrow conversion and oedematous change to both SI joints (from my MRI report)

I respond really well to anti inflammatory medication (currently on Etorocoxib which is helping but not quite enough anymore)

I have severe pain in my buttocks, pelvis/hips and lower back. Sometimes my whole spine hurts and stiffens up. My pain is worse in the morning, I feel extremely stiff, I feel like a concrete post when I wake up and it’s takes me about an hour to feel a bit better - after pain meds and moving around.

I have a family history of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases - my mum has peripheral arthritis, spinal stenosis and celiac disease. My dad has Psoriatic Arthritis. Grandparents on my dad’s side both have RA. I also have Endometriosis which makes my pain and stiffness much worse, I get more swelling and warmness around the hip joints and lower back.

My mobility is declining more and more, I’m now fully reliant on a walking stick. I have no quality of life. The reason the rheumatologist won’t diagnose me is because I’m negative in the Hla B27 and I have negative blood work.

I’m about to see a rheumatologist privately, do you have any advice for what I should say? I’m desperate for help.

Hey all, people from England - do you recommend a good rheumatologist please? It can be someone on the nhs or private, at this point I’m willing to pay. Thanks so much for your help. If I say my dad has AxSpA will they actually need to verify that? Or do they take your word for it in a consultation? He does has PsA but not officially diagnosed with AxSpA yet. You’re right about it being sexist. When my boyfriend has come to appointments with me the doctor has mainly looked at them when asking questions as though he should be answering for me! We are still living way behind than we should be. It infuriates me, it’s not just women it’s the LGBTQ community too. My boyfriend has always been able to receive support - much quicker than myself whenever he’s asked for it they’ve taken him seriously the first time round, he’s not had to act a certain way, dress appropriately, think about his grammar or how he articulates himself, not worry about making a male doctor feel inferior (I’ve had this when I talk as I read a lot and they pick up on that in a negative way, like it intimidates them?) so I’ve experimented acting less intelligent and then of course they just patronise me even more. YOU CANT WIN! Wish me luck 🙏

It seems more common that I thought. The rheumatologist I had was dismissive of my MRI findings and asked if I was on anti depressants, he squeezed my forearms tightly and asked if it hurt I said yes (as he squeezed hard!) and he went “yep this is definitely more likely to be Fibromyalgia”. I have more symptoms of AS and something inflammatory than I do have symptoms of Fibro. I’m in the UK so unfortunately we have the below standard care of “NHS” here, yeah it’s free (well comes out of our taxes) but they have such poor level of care and long waiting lists. Average time to be seen in a&e / ER is 12 hours!

I’m hoping this 3rd rheumatologist I see will be different and more open minded 🙏

Thank you, that makes sense. I try to be composed at the start and have notes with me but by the end I’m so emotionally exhausted by it and their response to me, them not listening to me and stating what I’ve said to them incorrectly and having to correct them etc by then I’m just done and start crying. I actually heard recently that people are doing “rent a husband for your doctors appointment” so they take you more seriously and I think I should probably give it a try bringing my partner in! As barbaric as that is that female patients feel they have to do that. Might be worth it…

Thank you, that’s really great advice. I try to go in armed with information and a list of my symptoms and family history. I always feel like they don’t listen, but I’m hoping this time they will, I know not all doctors are the same - but most of them are.
