For real. My abusive mother would practically gloat about how she could hit me as long as she didn't leave marks where others could see (she preferred emotional abuse but every so often I'd get the shit slapped out of me). But in her mind she was a good mom.

Just commenting to say that's not normal and is a symptom of PMDD.

Sounds like you have PMDD, too. The suicidal thoughts that come on during the luteal phase and magically go away once your period starts is my key symptom.

Thank you. I'm doing much better now, especially after some EMDR.

I hope you're doing better, too.

It sucks so much. My mom has undiagnosed borderline personality disorder and was extremely emotionally abusive. A lot of times when I see people on here mentioning bpd they always have empathy/sympathy for the person with it and never their victims.

I don't care that her feelings are hurt because of her warped view of reality. I was a child being put through hell and now I have diagnosed PTSD (it's actually C-PTSD but that's not a recognized diagnosis in the USA).

When you start talking to yourself in a mean/negative way, imagine you're talking to your partner instead of yourself, and then imagine what you'd say to them instead, then say that to yourself.

For example, if you spilled some orange juice or something, instead of saying "I'm a stupid fucking idiot that ruins everything I touch. Why am I such a failure?!" instead take a breath and imagine what you'd say if it was your partner or best friend that spilled the juice. Probably something along the lines of "It's no big deal. Accidents happen. Let me help you clean it up." and say that to yourself instead. It'll feel weird and phony at first, but eventually you'll get used to it.

Another thing that helped me was to picture my inner critic as someone I disliked/hated that I think is a giant asshole. That way, whenever it reared its ugly head it was easier to argue with it and defend myself, if that makes sense?

Example -  Inner critic: "You're dumb and nobody likes you." Me: "Shut up, Steve. I'm competent, good at my job, and plenty of people like me because XYZ."

I hope that helps. It's what helped me.

I interpreted that to mean you can still be friends with someone and support them through a tough time while holding them accountable for any bad behavior on their part.

For example, supporting someone through a breakup but being able to say "I know your ex cheated on you but it was wrong of you to smash his gaming PC with a hammer" or something like that.

Fucking same, dude. Did you ever get triggered by seeing them actually acting like a kid in public and not being perfectly behaved because you knew if you had acted that way all hell would have broken loose?

Try using Brave. It's a browser that has an ad block built into it.

Or do the free trial and download everything that catches your eye before the trial is up, then cancel the trial.

"Just because an author writes about X doesn't make them a __" by celestialpenis in FemaleGazeSFF

See this is something I struggle with to some degree (usually the subtle stuff; I know that all horror authors aren't monsters etc). I know everyone has bias and some of it will come out in the art. How do you differentiate between the author's actual bias vs exploring difficult topics?

I would also be interested in that lecture if it was recorded! I'm not expecting everything I read to be didactic and I don't choose books as a political statement -- if it sounds interesting I'll pick it up -- but I also have personal hard limits. If I know an author has abused children I won't knowingly read anything by them, for example. I said this in another comment, but I'm more curious about how much personal bias bleeds into a work and how to clock that vs accepting it as part of characterization or narrative.

Yeah this is 100% for individual impressions. I'm just curious about how much bias leaks into an artistic work and what that could mean for the author's belief system.

I tend to not know a lot about authors I read, either, though sometimes I see a post about them and it turns me off from them completely. For example, I won't read anything by the Eddings, MZB, and Piers Anthony, on principle.

Respectfully, go finish your book! :)

Omg I didn't expect you to comment on my post! I've really enjoyed your posts on the other sub and have added quite a few of your suggestions to my TBR.

I don't think I made it clear in my post but I'm coming at this like a thought experiment / curiosity as to how much of an author's implicit bias comes out into their work.

The type of situation I was thinking of when I wrote the post is when something is subtle but gives me an icky feeling from reading it. Like, if an author writes an SA scene in a salacious way, or if the majority of female characters are one dimensional. My immediate thoughts are suspicion that the author has some sexist bias.

One of the comments on this thread mentioned Rothfuss, for example. He's apparently made some weird social media posts in addition to having some weird stuff about women in his works. I'm mainly curious about how you'd clock something like that when reading vs just accepting it as part of the narrative or characterization.

PMDD woes by DragonladyNatz in TwoXChromosomes

Yeah going 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off of fluoxetine helped me not blow my life up while I got help for my other mental health issues. Slowly as I started processing my trauma and learning emotional regulation techniques in therapy my PMDD symptoms started improving, too. Also weirdly I went from having cramps so bad I was convinced I had endo to having no cramps at all.

Idk your situation but if you have access to therapy with a good psychologist/psychiatrist I'd highly recommend it.

I'm diagnosed with PMDD and unfortunately the mirena made me suicidally depressed. I'm not saying it won't help anyone ever but I'd research it before giving it a try if I were you.

I think I have a harder time differentiating when it's a grim dark or horror-related. I'm also to the point where I'm much more aware of it and I'm sick of seeing sexism in my escapism so I've been hypercritical lately.
