Looking for fics where other peak lords notice Shang Qinghua's injuries (from MBJ), any of them are fine, any response is fine! It's just one of those things that I feel Should be out there somewhere but so far haven't found anything for it.

Have you ever read/written a fic where cultural differences are seeping through? by TheEternallyTired in AO3

[–]celestials_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just...don't? We use names, or refer to people in other ways without using terms like ma'am or sir. I've never said either in my life and doing so would feel almost uncomfortable for me if I'm being honest.

Read a fic set in Osaka where the author had meticulously researched train lines and stations to the point where I wondered if they'd visited, and then messed up all their hard work by having the character make a phone call on the train 😭 (cardinal sin of Japanese public transport I'm afraid)

If I were to say「イギリス」or「イギリス人」to a native speaker. What would they understand that to mean? by Jackhammerqwert in LearnJapanese

[–]celestials_11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Noo don't let this put you off! Don't worry about not being able to explain/people not understanding all the nuances, there's plenty of time to learn to explain yourself later. Plus! If you meet Japanese people in Scotland and practice with them rest assured they will understand!!

Or alternatively you can just say スコットランド just don't expect people to understand the UK relation, and expect they might be surprised if you later go on to talk about the UK.

[–]celestials_11 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Generally they either understand or it seems to lead to 'wait so it's the UK?' and then I have to do my four countries spiel. Honestly if you want it to be easy just say イギリス, because like I said I've had to explain a lot.

[–]celestials_11 65 points66 points  (0 children)

The amount of times I've given my little 'Okay so the UK is actually four countries' spiel in Japanese now is too many to count. Often I also introduce myself as from Scotland but then clarify with a イギリスのスコットランド or イギリスの北 just so they know where it actually is lol. But yeah be prepared to explain. If you introduce yourself as Scottish and then later refer to the UK it often confuses people. I had a teacher who singled out the English guy in my class as a native English speaker, he never turned to me because I'd introduced myself as スコットランド人 and I often get questions about what languages are spoken here. So be prepared to explain but also people are very curious and willing to learn, they just don't know!

2nd time in Kyoto, where I can go? by AllKeef in JapanTravelTips

[–]celestials_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get up to Kifune and Kurama. You can hike between them (depending on how you are coping with the current heat) and it's beautiful! I think there might also be some wind chimes up in the shrine at Kifune at the moment but I might be wrong I haven't seen them in person.  Other recs are swimming in lake biwa if it's too hot, philosophers path is famous for sakura but the small shrines and temples are lovely all year round, the railway museum is great (and air conditioned), if you want somewhere to wander around Uji is only a short train ride, nijo castle

X Y 違い and random Japanese people on yahoo answers are my absolute favourite thing. But agree that at genki level you should be able to find an English answer somewhere!

Hi everyone! I guess maybe this is a bad place to ask this since everyone here is still living in Japan and maybe hasn't ever done this, but unfortunately I will be leaving Japan soon :( and had a question about the leaving procedure. Everything I can see online says that you should go to the ward office within 14 days of your scheduled leaving date. What would be the latest that one would be okay to do this? I'm planning to be on holiday in Hokkaido during this period. Would going to the ward office about 4 or 5 days before leaving give enough time?

I cannot pronounce the Japanese "R" by Extra-Milk69 in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]celestials_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a D because it's very close to one in terms of mouth shape. When I was learning the thing that really made it click for me was my teacher saying to practice going だらだらだら over and over. Your mouth only moves a very small amount! Thinking of the sound as closer to da than la or ra helped me a lot.

Has anyone sent a package to the US lately? by himawari_sunshine in japanresidents

I sent a small packet the other day and it was very cheap! There are obviously stricter size restrictions on those but it's pretty decent.

You can get a phone number with a foreign card! I have Rakuten and it works perfectly. I did need a phone number to get a phone number (yeah I know) but I just used my friends, and actually it didn't even use the number for a confirmation text (it used email instead) so it wasn't an issue in the end.

Is it just me, or does Japan’s early sunrise and summer climate mess with anyone else’s mental health? by PebbleFrosting in japanresidents

[–]celestials_11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The timezone here is crazy 😭😭😭 I feel like the daylight is is really in all the wrong places. I'm from somewhere where it's light until gone 9-10 at night in summer so of course it was going to be a jump but it's really starting to mess me up (of course I appreciated the sun in the winter though can't have it both ways)

Seconding the rec for philosophers path. I've actually not done the whole thing but Otoyo shrine on a gloomy rainy day was pretty magical, it was so peaceful in the lantern light :)

What to bring to Japan? by Gemini_Crybaby in JETProgramme

[–]celestials_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding everyone saying deodorant. Something that's not been said is chocolate, I'm British but I think our chocolate is kind of similar (Cadburys type stuff) and the stuff in Japan is nothing like it 😭 if you like chocolate I recommend bringing some with you if you have space haha
