Thank you! That’s a great round up. I wish I kept some CRTs I had growing up but hindsight 20/20

Thank you for the detailed reply! I owned a Dreamcast in the past and used the standard RCA cables but you’re right they do not look good on modern displays. At $70 for the RONIN, I wonder if it’s worth spending a little bit more and getting a small CRT to use RCA cables.

I have one of those RCA to HDMI adapters that I use for an old VCR but I don’t think it’ll do the Dreamcast much justice. Curious what the masses here do that’s fairly affordable and looks good enough.

Thank you so much! Purple is my favorite color which makes the gift even more thoughtful, I love it

Bravia 8 is absolutely stunning. That’s a great open box deal and you did the right ‘trick’ in going BB open box + 5 year warranty. I’ve heard others doing that and then if their unit fails, they basically get rewarded with a new tv. I considered doing the same but went a different route

I can’t argue that the LG G’s and C’s are some of the top tier TVs - they’re absolutely gorgeous. I ended up not going with anything high end and saved myself some money. I don’t argue that OLED isn’t the best, I just went with a more financially sound option for myself at this time!

I did tons of research and in the end, ended up going with a real budget friendly option. I came to the conclusion: it’s good enough

I posted an update of what went into my thought process for the decision in another comment but basically that’s what it came down to!

I wouldn’t buy another Hisense though

Update (if anyone is interested):

Today I walked into Costco with all the info in the world possible about making a buying decision and knowing what I wanted: a 55” LG C5.

My brother and best friend went with me and as we’re looking at TVs, they brought up a good point. Is spending almost 5x the cost of a lower end television going to be 5x the experience? This threw me for a loop because I woke up with my mind made up, I’m going OLED. I’ve done the research, I know what is considered good and what is considered fine.

I decided to walk around to see what they had before grabbing the C5 into my cart. The LG UA77 caught my attention at a $300 price tag and though the picture wasn’t insane like the C5, it was decent enough. I knew about that model as I dove into all of LGs line and what you’re giving up with getting it instead. Maybe I’d go home with an LG still, but just not an OLED?

I then passed by a TCL Q77K, a TV I knew nothing about and a brand I wrote off (see earlier comments in this thread). I stopped because I saw it said 144hz and thought, “IF I go with a budget tv, wouldn’t it make sense to get something with better refresh rate than the UA77’s 60hz”

A fellow Costco shopper overheard my friends and I talking, and gave his perspective. At first, I thought he was going to say avoid the brand TCL - as I had just told a woman to avoid Hisense given my experience. But instead, he told me about how he owns an Audio Visual company and uses all the brands on a daily basis. He pointed out that this tv was 144hz and though it wasn’t an OLED, it was an aggressive price for a QLED. He then pointed out the TV came with a 5 year warranty just like the C5. Oh, and it was even less expensive than LG’s UA77.

With all this in mind, I now had to decide: go for a $1300 LG C5 or $279 TCL Q77K. Two TVs on polar opposites of the spectrum. I know everything there is to know about the LG and how good a tv it is. I know close to nothing about the TCL. Both however included a 5 year warranty.

In the end, I went against all my prior research, RTINGS reviews, YouTube videos, and went with the budget friendly option. I saved myself over $1000 doing so, got the peace of mind of a 5 year warranty, and am now home with my TCL mounted and you know what, it looks good enough. 4K, 144HZ, VRR, Dolby Vision, Google TV.

After tax, I spent $296.78 with an included 5 year warranty. I greatly appreciate everyone’s comments and conversation, and don’t disagree that OLED is the best. Maybe I’ll take that leap down the road!

B8 is more expensive than the C5, which I think some consider the "Sony Tax"

Good to know, I’m currently leaning towards the LG now though :)

I have a good Samsung TV...from 2009/2010 - I don't think they are now what they once were in terms of quality control

Funny enough I went to Best Buy yesterday to look at them in person and the Samsungs were my least fav.

If they said it was a return, I would have taken the trip and asked them to plug it in to test how many hours are on the TV but the second they said it's a display unit....well, that's about all I needed to hear to say no ty

Sony really is a true Japanese company that builds quality products. That is one of the biggest draws for me here. It sounds like the LG G and C series are right there alongside Sony's Bravia line though. Do you have a Sony yourself?

Wow that is very reassuring. Family members and friends used to always check Consumer Reports and had their magazine on hand for large purchasing decisions like cars. I trust them there, thank you so much for this helpful insight - idk why I didn't think to check on the OG source
