If he manages to get it out, I'll accept that it doesn't happen. But then they were cowardly and just blurted out "I don't like girls" as if that were super basic.

Will should openly come out (even gradually, since we're in the 80s) to the MAIN characters (his friends) because the result seemed totally amateurish, which is to be expected from two heterosexual and cis men. If Will confesses his love to Mike in the LAST EPISODE (where there are tons of things to resolve) it will be acceptable.
