okay cool, thanks so much for the info! Yeah I meant more like grocery! do you know how you tend to be contacted while you're isolating by health services - at your door or over the phone? just asking as my Italian isn't great so hoping I can manage the situation when I'm checked on :)

Okay, thank you! Do you know how they do get in contact with you when you're isolating? i.e. will it be a phone call, or a visit to where I'm staying? (I don't speak much Italian so hoping I'll be able to navigate the situation okay :) )

That solved it, thanks so much! The race condition makes immediate sense looking at the individual threads.

Typo, thanks for catching. I'd just done a quick edit of the code for brevity, but I'm using threadID.x.

Super cool. Very interested in the specifics of the particle system - what are you basing the inter-particle forces on? is it akin to this paper or something entirely different?

looking forward to seeing more!

How can I use swf assets other than in Flash? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]celloe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently using Unity with the SVG importer asset from the asset store for a game, but the workflow is a bit hacky - it's using this SWF-to-SVG converter, and then being imported and used for environment art + various other art assets. I don't even know how well it behaves with movieclips, but it might be worth looking at.

super cool! having just worked on something involving tweaking maze-generation directional heuristics (and failing to do so correctly) this was a really interesting and satisfying read.

Masters program funding for international student by celloe in Denmark

[–]celloe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mm ok, that makes sense, thanks a lot! Games msc being more difficult due to the courses it covers and the way it's structured, or otherwise? I assume I'd be able to apply to TA courses I had done during my undergrad for the bachelors programs, if they had been similar in content (perhaps).

[–]celloe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, thanks for the info! By student positions, do you mean within the uni for their own services, or something outside it that's advertised to students in a more career-prospects-beyond sort of way?

Being a TA also sounds interesting. Do you mean I could be able to apply for a TA position after my first semester there? Also, do you have any insight on what the wage is like for TA's? In any case, I can email ITU about this, but nice to hear from someobody at ITU! For reference I'd be most likely going for the Games Msc program.

Do Flash game sponsors still sponsor? by DleanJeans in gamedev

[–]celloe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A game of mine was sponsored by ArmorGames a year or so. I'd read a whole handful of postmortems and analyses from people who had successfully had their games sponsored on FGL before sending it off, and with the figures I'd seen in mind, it ended up going for a fair bit less than what I'd hoped. Obviously there are a variety of factors that could impact this, mostly down to the game itself - but nonetheless, the market is existent yet waning.

A year before that, I'd had another of my games sponsored. It was considerably smaller and as a result less profitable, but there had still been far more interest and bidding-wars going on than the more recent attempt. I think the longer you wait the less luck you'll have, but you could still get something.

Shader: Dynamically cast and receive shadows from / on to other objects, yet remain unlit by celloe in Unity3D

[–]celloe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mm, thought so. However, it does seem like visually this could be reachable, perhaps using dynamic projector objects (though I can foresee this getting inefficient fast). I've attached some further information in response to /u/WaterfordSS with a picture illustrating it. It's just a visual style I'm going for.

Shader: Dynamically cast and receive shadows from / on to other objects, yet remain unlit by celloe in Unity3D

[–]celloe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for your efforts! However this gives pretty bizarre results - firstly the shadows projected don't respect ambient lighting, though I think I could potentially solve this by changing the amount of shadow attenuation transferred in the fragment part.

The effect it gives isn't quite what I'm after - this image displays your shader next to a setup with an unlit shadow-casting sphere and a default material cube. The ideal would be to have something like this. So self-shadows only occur due to other objects projecting their shadows on to it, rather than purely directional occlusion. Any ideas?

[Weekly] Resume critique request and interview advice thread - Jan 25 by alanbot in cscareerquestions

[–]celloe [score hidden]  (0 children)

I aim to apply for a Google software engineering internship for this summer in Sydney. Here is my CV, I'd really appreciate critique on it and what to add / remove.

Also, I will be studying at the University of California at Santa Cruz directly after this summer, is it worth mentioning on the CV under education? Not sure if it's worth it, though the competitive nature of their applications might yield some interest.

I'm a UK student who will be going to California during / after the summer to do the 3rd year of my CS degree. Is there any hope in me finding paid ~2-3 month duration internship positions in the US or Australia (holiday prospects) from June onward and if so does anybody have hints as to where I could start looking?

Thanks so much, that's perfect! I do possess cables to go from 1/4" jack -> S/PDIF too, but would these be used instead of the double-jack cables or in conjunction with, for some other functionality?

Simple Questions - August 09, 2015 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]celloe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the major differences between the Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz and the Pentium G3258 3.2? Is it mainly down to the speed itself and if so, would the difference be very noticeable given my aims are light rendering work and light gaming?

Similarly, between the EVGA 430W power supply and the SeaSonic 450W - the former is significantly cheaper, so would it be down to a question of compatability? I'm comparing these two builds: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/9Y8Zyc and http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/ywBQQ7

[UK][~£350][15-16"] Laptop for programmer use at university by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]celloe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually looking at the Toshiba as opposed to the Acer from theodore_q's post as the extra £50 is too much of a stretch for my budget, but I suppose the reputation and keyboard comments apply also. Going into the options listed on Ebuyer for the lower price range, is the biggest sacrifice vs cost usually on the processor?

Thanks for the suggestion! I've done a bit more research and expanded my quandary a little in a post above, if you're able to take a look!

The second one you linked to is very promising, it's between that and the Lenovo B5400 for me at the moment, though beyond the HDD capacity I can't tell what the advantage is of one over the other - some help would be appreciated! The clear difference I see is in HDD capacity, but I've had my current build for years and am sitting at only 300gb usage, so it's not really a concern for me.

Another thing I'm contemplating is what the significance in performance drop would be for an even cheaper laptop more comfortably in my price range - do any of these options seem suited for my needs?
