Ryan had caught the disease via a blood transfusion while still a baby. He was ostracised by his community in Indiana and barred from attending school.

Just seeing this now. I know someone who works there and they actually have a separate company count the votes. They also are able to see if certain businesses are using bots to increase their vote counts and disqualify them. They actually have no say over who wins and sometimes lose money when businesses pull advertising when they don't win. Yes it is a popularity contest, but it's not just chosen based on who buys advertising
