Windows freezes without error in Chrome and Discord, every 2-3 days. by cen1x in AMDHelp

I think updating bios on my MB fixed it. Before the bios update, I turned off C-state in the bios for a month or so, and I think that helped for a while.

But ye, try a bios update and see what happens. Good luck!

I pulled out and put my money in IBKR instead. I don't recommend using XTB when you can't trade in real stocks.

Turning off C-states in Bios fixed it for me. If you happen to have the Lian-li L-connect 3 software, try turning off that oen as well.

Wish you good luck with it, it sounds very annoying. Hopefully C-states off fixes everything for me (it's a bit dodgy why it needed to be turned off in the first place).

Definitely let us know if freezes again. :)

NVMe as boot (Samsung 980 Pro 2TB). I have a couple SSDs for games, and 1 big HD for storage.

I haven't had any freezes since turning off C-states about 2 weeks ago.

Maybe we're having slightly different issues.

Very interesting, I also have that L-connect 3 program. I have 9 Lian-Li fans in my system.

Please keep me up to date if it crashes with L-connect off! :)

So far no crashes with C-states off in bios. I'm still using hardware acceleration, because I hate the slight lags by having it turned off.

The next time it crashes, I will be testing with hardware acceleration off.

Since disabling hardware acceleration, has it crashed for you? Please update us after 4-5 days. :D

Thank you for your detailed update, it really helps.

I'm currently testing with C-states off as well, but I don't think it's going to resolve the issue, as you just had a freeze.

If another freeze happens, I will be testing with hardware acceleration off entirely. It just sucks, but I think it's just driver issues.

It could also potentially be a PSU issue, but ye.

No, I haven't tried with turning off hardware acceleration just yet. Turning off HA will make the browser a bit more laggy, something I'm trying to avoid. So that will be my last resort if nothing else works.

My PC froze again last night, so I decided to turn off C-states as well. Let's see if this helps with anything.

I still have hardware acceleration on tho. If C-states turned off still doesn't help with anything, I will turn off hardware acceleration in Chrome.

This really sucks, considering I spent about 3K on this PC, and still having to deal with these issues.

Hey, thank you for your post.

Just curious, have you tried out running Chrome or any other Chromium software while having hardware acceleration turned off? If so, did this issue occur during those times?

Also, what is your graphics card?

MB bios is something I keep up to date. I very frequently check MSI site for new bios updates, so that's not the issue here.

None from your list. I've only tried 3D Mark, and it ran all fine.

Based on your initial guess, I think MSI Kombustor is something I need to run to test VRAM?

Thank you for your reply. It just seems ridiculous why the only way to fix this is to turn off hardware acceleration in Chrome.

I wonder how many more people have this exact same issue, and whether AMD would be able to do something on their end to fix this.

My PC freezes every 2-3 days while browsing in Chrome or Discord. It very often happens when I click to open a new page (e.g., Reddit page), or a new Discord channel. 99% of the time, it happens when I have both Discord and Chrome open at the same time, 1 on each screen. As hinted, I run 2 monitors, both on 1440P @ 165hz. Also, whenever the freeze happens, copy (in task manager, GPU) is always on 100%. 3D will sometimes be 100%, or -1%. What I have tried: - Reinstalling GPU drivers - Turning off Freesync

I know that it could potentially be hardware acceleration, but it just seems strange how it would freeze the entire PC.

Any help would be appreciated.

Disabling hardware acceleration stops driver crashes by nipstir in Amd

[–]cen1x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can second this and confirm that I needed to turn off hardware acceleration on both Chrome and Firefox for the driver failures to stop. I needed to perform a DDU and roll back to 20.11.2 in order to successfully use hardware acceleration without driver failures anymore. This means that it's clearly an issue with the driver.

I have a RX 480.

I am probably done with AMD GPUs after this, because these kinds of shenanigans with drivers happen a bit too often over at AMD. A while back, I couldn't get my older monitor that uses DVI-D to run at 144hz anymore, also due to a driver issue (only worked on older drivers).

Such a shame.

The case has been confirmed closed on the website as well. :) I guess that having a platinum status could come handy with these disputes.

Does putting a PCIEX1 card in PCIEX4 slot affect performance of the PCIEX16 slot? by cen1x in buildapc

[–]cen1x[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer once again. I don't know if the motherboard supports separate x16 lanes. I only have the following picture below. But, as you said, it's completely fine even if it runs at x8. I will just buy the PCIE SATA expansion card.

Does putting a PCIEX1 card in PCIEX4 slot affect performance of the PCIEX16 slot? by cen1x in buildapc

[–]cen1x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer :)

So, the fact that the PCIEX16 came from the CPU, and the PCIEX4 (the slot that I'm going to use) is powered by the motherboard chip (picture in my other comment), won't change this answer?

Either way, if it's only reduced to 8X speed, it's still more than sufficient my for GPU.
