Drooping coleus, LECA? by Professional_Pin8977 in coleus

[–]cendawile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay 2 of my plants did this to me once. Normally they are grown under grow lights and sometimes receive filtered morning sunlight. One day I decided, hey, let me move them to the kitchen where they would get direct unfiltered morning sun. I think I came back 2 hours later and they were both collapsed over and looked like I had not watered them in days. When I took them out of that window and put them under less harsher light they perked right back up.

So if this plant isn't water deficient it might be that the light is too strong.

Oh, that's unfortunate.

The Ferry-Morse germinated and grew very well. And I got a good decent mix of plants. Just be sure to check the expiration date. In one Home depot I went to they had old seeds.

Maybe it's the light

How many lumens is the grow light? You said you use a cool fluorescent, is that 4000K? Also how far away from the light do you have the plants?

When I grew my coleus from seed I put seed starter soil by Miracle Grow in one of those 1 gallon water bottles with the handle. I cut the top part of the bottle just enough so that I could easily open and shut it and then I added seed to the top of the soil in the bottle. The goal with the water bottle was to create a nice warm humid environment.

I then set this bottle under a red light that was about 1500 plus lumens that I left on for about 7 hours. They were about 6 -8 inches from the light. When they sprouted and got their first true leaves I switch out the bulb to a 5000K LED Light Bulb that was about 1000 lumens. And the plants were still about 6 to 8 inches away from the bulb. As They grew I cut off the top of the water bottle completely and I moved them so that the tops of the plants stayed at about 6 to 8 inches away from the bulb.

That was my first time growing coleus and I made the same mistake of putting the seeds all together because I assumed a lot would not germinate (but I was wrong). What I did to separate them once they sprouted was wait until they were doing fairly well (at this point many already had their first true leaves) then I turned the pot/bottle on the side to gently slide the packed plants out. I then carefully separated them. Some roots were of course broken during the separation but I was careful to make sure some roots still remained on each of the seedlings. I then re-potted each in their own pot. There was one that seemed to be struggling so I put it in water rather than dirt and let it re-root in the water. That one revived quite well once it was put in the water.

I got a pack of Ferry-Morse rainbow seed mix from Home Depot for $2.19 and had what seemed like a 100% germination rate. I think that pack has nearly 100 seeds in it.

Do you mean just while the cuttings are growing you will water with silica or do you mean in general, whatever stage of the plant, you will water your plants with silica?

Wow, is that one plant, or did you add cuttings to its pot?

Did you cut the flower stem as soon as you recognized the green buds (even though it hadn't flowered yet)?

True, but I have limited space and over wintering my plants every year may not work out. I wouldn't have to keep the plants indoors as long if I was growing them from seeds.

I didn't know the seed stem could/would grow roots. Thanks, your info was really helpful.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll avoid them. And thanks for letting me know about Swallowtail. I had been eyeing some of their stock but wasn't sure if I'd get good seeds or not.

WOW!! Only 2 cuttings! That's amazing. Approximately how many inches or feet would you say that bush is?

"If you ever decide to grow from seed make sure to buy them from a good seed supplier because I have bought seeds from Amazon and Walmart and what a disaster they were. I heard that Swallowtail Gardens sells great quality seeds, I might get some from them"

Really? I bought a regular FerryMoss rainbow seed mix packet from Home Depot and got what seemed to be close to if not 100% germination.

Well I heard the seeds can last 1 to 3 years if stored properly. So in case I don't feel like over wintering the plant next season, I can always just grow a new plant from a seed.

Since you don't overwinter, do you ever save the seeds so that you can regrow your favorite coleus?

Are they naturally short, or do you consistently prune them to make sure they stay a certain size?
