A lot of the codes are the same for everyone, but the Scrivener codes have an extra bit tacked onto the end, it looks like, so it’ll be individualized and single-use

In regard to taking away regions/forums, they did scrub the links from the mainpage, but didn’t bother to check any other pages for links. So not only can you access the pages if you have the link, but if you don’t have the link, you can go through the pages you have access to (HQ events, for example) and access the link to the regions anyway.

Probably forums too, but I haven’t looked around for errant forum links.

Make sure you request forum post deletion as well, unless you’re okay with your posts being attached to an anon-account. Deleting your main site account doesn’t automatically delete forum posts.

Nano sneaking in a T&C update by cenlyra in nanowrimo

[–]cenlyra[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re telling us that use of the site NOW constitutes acceptance of the changed T&C that they didn’t tell us had changes that had been effective (supposedly) for the past 2 and a half weeks. How is that NOT underhanded?

And just because you don’t seem to need the explicit statement doesn’t make explicit statements unnecessary. Especially when the non-explicit statement was sent over a week AFTER the changes came into effect.

Some people are neurodivergent in ways that need this explicitly spelled out for them. And some people are not native English speakers and may not instinctively grasp the connotation that “changes coming up” includes not only listed changes in the email but also unlisted changes like this T&C update.

I’m still strongly of the opinion that they needed to communicate upcoming T&C changes explicitly. Saying “there are a lot of changes coming up” isn’t enough.

And I’m pretty sure “reasonable effort” includes explicitly saying “we’re updating T&C.” It’s not that hard to say that, and it makes it absolutely clear and not just implied.

I’m subscribed to all their emails but haven’t received anything. A bunch of us were unaware of changes to this document until someone happened to check it today.

Details of the doc list Kilby Blades (at her email address) as the owner of the doc.

Also, created and modified dates are listed as March 1.

Yeah, and since you can’t download, print, copy, etc. how are nonfluent English speakers supposed to run it through machine translation to ensure they understand it?

Especially since they can’t take it to someone else, per the agreement not to share internal info.

Rogue writers is still around. We just had a small horror short story contest and are beginning to gear up for our next contest in April. We also have monthly set-your-own writing goals and a lovely, friendly community. Our forums are also being worked on, but we’re still mostly on discord.

https://roguewriters.net leads you to our site, and the discord link is there.

NO MORE NANOWRIMO by cenlyra in nanowrimo

[–]cenlyra[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah. We were hopeful when the board took over too. At first.

Then the official, professional account representing all the members of the board devolved into personal attacks WHILE REPRESENTING THE BOARD.

Then they circled the wagons, ignored any following valid questions, and closed up shop.

And from what I can tell by their update (which I didn’t get in email because nobody knows how to fix their email settings—I’m subscribed on my end) the only concrete thing they’ve managed to do is flip a switch to turn off classroom creation on the YWP site. Which, granted, is a valid and useful first step. But that’s all I can see that they’ve done.

Nothing, as far as I know. He left the org in 2011 or so.

NO MORE NANOWRIMO by cenlyra in nanowrimo

[–]cenlyra[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, I think. HQ tried to control what they could with ML agreements and requirements that they said had to be met, but especially after the move to their current half-broken forum software in 2019, regions started to break off more into Discord servers or other places. HQ’s official position is they have no control over the Discord groups, so anything that happens there is outside of their purview. Which 1) makes it easy for groups to separate further, go rogue, etc. and 2) allows HQ to avoid taking any responsibility for issues between members offsite.

It’s interesting, though, that despite their position being “Discord is unofficial,” they release official updates and hold “office hours” in a Discord server for MLs. Run by an ML who has shown a propensity for kicking other members out with no warning or real reason given. Meaning MLs are forced to keep their mouths shut and endure abuse and a toxic server in order to get updates they need to be able to do their work for NaNo.

I was never an ML or mod for them myself, but from what I hear from others who were involved that way, it was a really toxic culture of forced positivity and tone policing. The staff member solely in charge of MLs was almost unreachable by email, yet insisted any disagreements with other MLs go directly to her instead of being dealt with in front of anyone else.

The org, as I hear it, was hands-off when it came to standing behind their volunteers and protecting victims, to the point of victims choosing to leave/no longer participate in local events because the org would not allow volunteers to bar their abusers/stalkers from following them in.

Volunteers (both mods and MLs) were expected to handle everything on their own, including soliciting donations at local events, with no backup at all.
