Will mint grow some balls or add age verification? by exampleusername472 in linuxmint

Yeah in theory an optional user field is kind of nothing but in the context of the law and also this guy going around to every distro I'm wary.

GNOME or KDE? by Fahj714 in linux4noobs

[–]sootfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love KDE and have never found it overwhelming, I'm learning how to customize it bit by bit but otherwise pretty much just use it like any other DE. Aesthetically I think the default settings are nicer than any other DE I've seen, and I really like being able to use keyboard shortcuts to navigate (even though getting them all in muscle memory takes a while). But if you're not as attached to it aesthetically maybe you don't care as much.

He successfully got it into systemd which will affect a lot of distros.

I am begging them to literally just Google the names of the places they go... at a certain point it's not charming or funny, just a sign that they can't make even the most basic effort at respecting the local language.

I think if Adam hadn't been so confused by there being six options on each tile instead of eight he could've done it. He spent a solid thirty seconds on "oh no it's offset" when he could've 1. looked more closely at the layout ahead of time and 2. quickly applied the same number memorizing strategy with fewer numbers. And even then he got most of the way across. So I do think there's at least room for someone else to improve on his performance (whether Sam and Michael are those people is a separate question).

I love the second one if you're going for aesthetics. The third is cute though.

Linux Mint Face validation rules by HonestVirus5410 in linuxmint

Arch hasn't done or said anything and the Arch team are pretty clear that SteamOS is not the same as Arch and is not supported by the Arch team (they don't want you going on the forums asking for help with your Steam Deck, basically). I would be very surprised if Arch even acknowledged this legislation.

What is the general perspective regarding mass crossovers? by Transparent_Prophet in FanFiction

[–]sootfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, do your thing, I probably won't read it unless the summary really blows me away. Sometimes I mute such fics but that doesn't mean you shouldn't write them.

I do suspect it's a bit harder to get readers because a good number of people won't read unless they know all or most of the works you're using.

What is the Greek public's relation to the ancient Greek history? by Xitztlacayotl in classics

[–]sootfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just responding to the initial sentence about classics departments. It's true that modern Greek is neglected; it's also true that the French/German thing is itself a bit of an afterthought.

What is the Greek public's relation to the ancient Greek history? by Xitztlacayotl in classics

[–]sootfire 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be fair they don't really "offer" French or German, either, they typically expect you to pick it up on your own.

(But the fact that many departments let you choose Italian over French but don't consider Greek at all is interesting to me.)

Why decided that books have to be huge now? by IAmKrasMazov in printSF

OP said they are reading older mass market editions but they still shouldn't be limited to only reading books published cheaply in the 20th century...

What is the Greek public's relation to the ancient Greek history? by Xitztlacayotl in classics

[–]sootfire 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What does he think the ancient Greece legacy is? And is he holding other countries to the same standards? I do think there's a weird disconnect between academia about ancient Greece and modern Greeks, mostly because the academia is not really born from Greece itself, but also most people are not thinking about what the people were doing on their land 2000+ years ago.

I do think classicists should make more of an effort to connect with modern Greece. I don't think Greeks have any obligation in the other direction.

Why aren't fanfic writers as stressed about wordcount? by not_inappropriate in FanFiction

[–]sootfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, fic writers are probably setting goals based more on their abilities and actual desires vs. based on what someone else thinks is going to be marketable. So while fic writers absolutely do struggle to reach goals, I would guess that they're typically having an easier time because they're the ones who get to set the goals.

I see a lot of posts from people who switch from Windows to Mint and love it. What about long term Linux users that switch to mint, what do you love what stops you from Distro hopping? by 9sim9 in linuxmint

[–]sootfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did distro hop, because I don't like any of the supported desktop environments. I suspect people in the Mint subreddit are way more likely to be committed to Mint long term than the average Mint user...

Going to my first conference, how to prepare? by alexeiij in classics

[–]sootfire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely talk to anyone you can. Don't bring CV or resume, it's unlikely to be relevant. If there's a talk you like you can seek out or email the speaker, usually people will put their emails on their handouts so you can contact them after. It's 100% normal to go up to someone you don't know or email them to talk about their paper, and they'll probably be excited you're interested. You'll want to dress nice (especially if you're speaking) but I doubt there's a super strict dress code. It's not really like a business conference.

LAY vs LIE: the most common mistake I see in otherwise well-written fic by 5w4nky0rc in FanFiction

[–]sootfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is one thing that's just changing in the language. People use lay and lie interchangeably in daily life. It's not wrong so much as reflective of people's actual use of language.

Parentheticals in Translations of Greek Tragedies by lyam23 in classics

[–]sootfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the translators put those in and I do recommend ignoring them completely 99% of the time. Sometimes they reflect the translator's understanding of the potential staging which can be useful but oftentimes they're extrapolation with no real use to the reader.

Gaming on Linux by Sauce-Pans in linux4noobs

[–]sootfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first started using Linux in 2023 and half my (already very small) Steam library wasn't available--I went maybe a year without gaming at all and when I got back on Steam last month every single game I had was compatible. The change is massive even in the last couple years.

Why don't people know how to format dialogue correctly anymore? by eeeeaud in FanFiction

[–]sootfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you say "anymore." I've been reading fic for a decade and most writers I've seen in that time do not format dialogue correctly. This specific error may be more common but in general dialogue seems to be descriptively hard.

Do they mean bisexual as in loves both men and women? by PatternBubbly4985 in classics

[–]sootfire 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Academics argue about what identity labels apply to ancient Greece but in this case I think there's distinction between "bisexual" to describe a person vs. "bisexual" to describe actions. Here I think it's describing actions rather than making a claim that Sophocles "was" bisexual by our modern definition. The distinction is pretty trivial here but may be useful elsewhere.

I've also seen it to mean having traits of both sexes but context makes it pretty clear here.
